Understanding Japanese taxi pricing

Japanese taxis use meters — no negotiation, no scams. The base fare in Osaka is approximately JPY 680 for the first 1.7 km, then JPY 80 per 255 meters. A late-night surcharge of 20% applies after 11 PM, though this rarely matters at Itami since the airport closes early.

Highway tolls are added to the meter fare. The route to Umeda may include JPY 300-700 in expressway tolls depending on the driver's route choice. You can ask the driver to avoid the expressway (ippan douro) to save on tolls, but the trip will take longer.

Cheapest option

The limousine bus at JPY 660 (EUR 4) to Umeda or Namba is actually the cheapest option and arguably the most convenient — no transfers, luggage stored below, and it drops you right at a major station.

What IC cards cover

If you have an ICOCA, Suica, or PASMO card, you can use it on the monorail, all connecting trains, and most taxis. Load at least JPY 1,000 before heading to the monorail to avoid buying individual tickets.
