Mattala Airport serves as a gateway to southern Sri Lanka, but the "city" is not the main draw — most travelers are heading to beaches, national parks, or coastal towns spread across a wide area. Here is what transport costs from HRI.
Price ranges by destination
All prices are approximate for a private transfer in a sedan or small SUV. Prices in LKR can shift with exchange rates and fuel costs.
| Destination | Distance | Drive time | Price range (USD) | Price range (LKR) | |-------------|----------|------------|-------------------|-------------------| | Hambantota town | 18 km | 20-25 min | $10-$20 | 3,000-6,000 | | Tissamaharama (Yala base) | 70 km | 60-90 min | $30-$50 | 9,000-15,000 | | Tangalle | 60 km | 45-60 min | $25-$45 | 7,500-13,500 | | Mirissa | 120 km | 90-120 min | $50-$75 | 15,000-22,500 | | Unawatuna | 150 km | 2-2.5 hrs | $60-$90 | 18,000-27,000 | | Galle | 170 km | 2-2.5 hrs | $70-$100 | 21,000-30,000 | | Colombo | 240 km | 4-5 hrs | $100-$150 | 30,000-45,000 |
Why prices vary
Sri Lanka's economy has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years, which directly impacts transport pricing. Fuel costs, the LKR exchange rate, and vehicle type all play a role. An air-conditioned sedan costs less than a larger vehicle. Booking in advance through a transfer platform usually gets you a better rate than negotiating on the ground — assuming you can even find a driver at Mattala.
Payment options
Pre-booked transfers are typically paid online at the time of booking or on completion. If you end up paying a local driver directly, Sri Lankan Rupees are preferred, though many will accept USD at their own exchange rate (which may not be favorable to you).
How to think about value
The cost from Mattala needs to be weighed against the alternative: flying into Colombo and paying for a 4-5 hour car hire south. That trip costs $100-$150 USD, plus you lose half a day. If Mattala has a flight that drops you close to your destination, a $30-$50 transfer to Yala or Tangalle is excellent value by comparison.
Tipping
Tipping drivers in Sri Lanka is common. For a short transfer to Hambantota, rounding up by 500-1,000 LKR is fine. For a longer drive to Yala or Tangalle, 1,000-2,000 LKR ($3-$7 USD) is appreciated.
