The late-night reality

Taxis (your best bet)

Glasgow airport taxis operate around the clock. Even at midnight, there are usually cabs at the rank. Glasgow does not switch to a higher night rate — the council's scale runs all week and on Sundays. What you pay extra at night is a flat £1.50 on any hire starting between 21:00 and 06:00 (£2.70 over Christmas and New Year).

So expect roughly £28-35 to the city center plus that £1.50 — a late fare is barely different from a daytime one. Taxis remain the most reliable late-night option.

Airport Express bus

The Service 500 runs 24 hours a day, so unlike most UK airport buses it is still an option after midnight — departures just thin out in the small hours. Check the current timetable on the First Bus website before your flight.

Uber

Usually available but wait times increase after 10 PM. On Friday and Saturday nights, surge pricing can make Uber more expensive than a taxi. Check the app — if it's surging, just take a cab.

Pre-booked transfer

The worry-free option. Your driver monitors your flight and is waiting in the arrivals hall regardless of delays. For late-night arrivals, this removes all uncertainty. The £40-55 price doesn't change with time of day.

Security and safety at night

Glasgow Airport is safe and well-lit around the clock. Security staff are present and the taxi rank has CCTV. The drive into the city is along the M8 motorway — well-lit and straightforward.

Glasgow city center at night is like any UK city — busy areas near Sauchiehall Street and the Merchant City are well-populated on weekend nights. If you're heading to a hotel, you'll be fine.

If your flight is severely delayed

There's no hotel inside Glasgow Airport terminal. The closest options:

  • Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport — 2-minute walk from the terminal
  • Courtyard by Marriott — right next to the airport

Rates move with demand and the season, so check the hotel's own site for the night you need.

The terminal itself has limited overnight seating. It's not the worst airport to be stuck in, but it's not set up for sleeping. If you're facing a very late arrival with an early morning connection, book one of the nearby hotels.

Night transport to further destinations

If you're heading beyond Glasgow city center at night:

All three are outside the Glasgow city boundary, where the meter no longer sets the price: the driver doesn't have to take the hire, and can charge above the meter as long as they tell you the extra and you agree before moving off. There is no published fare, so agree it at the rank — or book ahead.

For these longer journeys at night, a pre-booked transfer is almost always better. You know the exact cost, the driver is expecting you, and you avoid negotiating a price at midnight on an unfamiliar route.
