Getting from Glasgow Airport with kids and family

Last updated: March 2026

Glasgow Airport is manageable and family-friendly. The city center is close, so you won't be stuck in transport for long. Here's what families need to know.

UK child car seat law

In the UK, children must use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135cm (4'5") tall, whichever comes first. However:

  • Taxis and private hire vehicles are exempt — children can travel without a car seat in a licensed taxi
  • But this doesn't mean it's ideal, especially on the motorway
  • Private transfers can provide child seats if you request them when booking
If you're renting a car, child seats are available from rental companies for £5-15/day.

Best transport for families

Pre-booked transfer (best for families)

  • Cost: £40-60 for a standard car, £55-75 for a minivan
  • Why: Driver meets you inside, helps with luggage, child seats available
  • Book: Specify number and ages of children for correct car seats

Glasgow hackney cab

  • Cost: £25-35 metered
  • Benefit: Surprisingly spacious interior — the classic Glasgow cab is great for families
  • Luggage: Room for 2-3 large bags plus carry-ons
  • No child seats but legally exempt

Airport Express bus

  • Cost: £8.50 adult, free for under-5s, half-price for 5-15
  • Works for: Families with older kids and manageable luggage
  • Challenges: Strollers need folding, no dedicated luggage storage (overhead racks only)

Glasgow Airport family facilities

GLA has decent family facilities:

  • Baby changing rooms in the arrivals area
  • Family washrooms available
  • Pharmacy (Boots) for emergency baby supplies
  • Food options including grab-and-go if kids need feeding before the ride
  • Free Wi-Fi for entertaining kids during any wait

Luggage with a family

Glasgow's classic hackney cabs are deceptively roomy. The boot takes 2 large suitcases, and the spacious interior can fit carryons around you. For a family of 4 with standard holiday luggage, a single cab usually works.

If you have more than 3 large suitcases plus a stroller, pre-book a minivan transfer.

| Family size | Recommended transport | Cost | |---|---|---| | 2 adults + 1 child | Taxi or sedan transfer | £25-55 | | 2 adults + 2 children | Taxi or minivan transfer | £25-70 | | 2 adults + 3+ children | Minivan transfer | £55-75 | | Extended family (5+) | Large vehicle transfer | £65-95 |

Weather reality

Glasgow weather is famously unpredictable — rain is likely year-round. The walk from the terminal to your transport is short and mostly covered, but have a jacket accessible. Scottish summers top out at 15-20°C; winters hover around 0-5°C.

The bus stop has a covered shelter. The taxi rank is right at the door. For transfers, the driver meets you inside — so weather isn't a factor.
