Getting from Guwahati Airport to the City with Kids

Last updated: April 2026

Travelling through Guwahati Airport with children requires more planning than most Indian airports. The 25 km ride to the city takes 45-60 minutes, and choosing the right transport makes the difference between a smooth start and a stressful one.

Child seats

Child seats are not available in Indian taxis, auto-rickshaws, or app cabs. This is a firm reality across the country. If you need one, your only option is a pre-booked transfer where you request it at booking time.

Specify the type: infant seat (rear-facing, up to ~13 kg), child seat (forward-facing, ~9-18 kg), or booster seat (~15-36 kg). Alternatively, bring your own portable travel seat — many families visiting Northeast India carry one for the multi-hour road trips.

Choosing the right vehicle

A standard sedan (Maruti Dzire, Toyota Etios) fits 2 adults and 1-2 small children with 2 bags. It gets tight quickly. For a family of 4 with luggage, request an SUV (Toyota Innova, Maruti Ertiga) at the prepaid counter for INR 200-400 extra.

If heading beyond Guwahati to Shillong, Kaziranga, or Tezpur, an SUV is essential — not optional. The roads are rough and the extra space matters on 3-5 hour drives.

Practical tips for families

  • Baby supplies: The airport has a small pharmacy and convenience store. Stock up before heading out, as highway stops are limited.
  • Water and snacks: Buy bottled water at the airport. The ride is long enough that children will need a drink.
  • Temperature: Guwahati is hot and humid (30-35C) from April to September. Always request an AC vehicle.
  • Monsoon season (June-September): Roads can flood. A pre-booked SUV with an experienced driver is invaluable during heavy rain.

Heading to Shillong or Kaziranga with kids

Many families fly into Guwahati and continue to Shillong (3-4 hours) or Kaziranga (4-5 hours). For these, a pre-booked SUV is the only sensible option. The Shillong road has sharp curves — carry motion sickness medication and plan a rest stop at Nongpoh, roughly the halfway point.
