FUJ - Fujairah

Arriving at Fujairah Airport with kids — a family guide

Fujairah is an increasingly popular family destination in the UAE, especially for travelers heading to the east coast beach resorts. The airport is small and easy, and getting to your hotel is usually the simplest part of the trip. Here is what to keep in mind.

Inside the terminal

Fujairah Airport is compact and easy to navigate with kids. There are no long walks between terminals, no confusing signage, and the whole process from landing to exiting the building takes 15 to 30 minutes on a normal day. Restrooms are available in the terminal. The facilities are clean but basic — do not expect dedicated family lounges or play areas.

One important note: between May and October, stepping outside the terminal means stepping into serious heat. Temperatures above 40 C with high humidity are common. Get into an air-conditioned vehicle quickly, especially with young children. Have water ready.

Car seats in the UAE

UAE law requires children under 4 to use a car seat and children under 10 to sit in the back seat. Enforcement varies, but the law exists. Taxis in Fujairah rarely have car seats available. If you are taking a taxi for the short ride to Fujairah city, you may end up without one.

For a private transfer, you can request a car seat at the time of booking. Specify the child's age and weight so the provider brings the right type. Confirm this is included and actually arranged — do not assume.

If child safety is a priority (and it should be, especially for longer drives), bring a lightweight travel seat from home. This gives you certainty in every vehicle you use during the trip.

Getting to the beach resorts

Many families flying into Fujairah are heading to the east coast resorts — Le Meridien Al Aqah, Fairmont Fujairah, Sandy Beach Hotel, or the Intercontinental. These are 20 to 40 km from the airport along the coast road. The drive is 15 to 30 minutes and scenic, following the Gulf of Oman shoreline.

Check if your resort offers airport pickup. Many do, and some include it with the room. This is often the easiest option for families — one less thing to arrange, and the resort knows exactly how to get you there.

If your resort does not offer pickup, a pre-booked transfer with enough space for family luggage, beach gear, and a stroller is the comfortable choice. A standard taxi can work for a family of four, but it may be tight with resort-quantity luggage.

Heading to Dubai with kids

Some families use Fujairah as an entry point to the UAE and then drive to Dubai. The journey is about 1.5 to 2 hours via the Hajar Mountains route. For kids, this can be a pleasant drive — the mountain scenery is striking, and the roads are excellent.

For this longer journey, a private transfer or rental car with proper car seats is the right call. A taxi with a running meter for two hours while kids ask "are we there yet" is nobody's ideal scenario.

Practical tips for families

  • Book a vehicle with enough space. UAE resort trips mean big bags.
  • Carry water and snacks, especially in summer. Dehydration happens fast.
  • Sunscreen and hats for the short walk from terminal to car — the sun is strong.
  • If heading to a resort, ask about the pickup service before you arrange anything else. It may already be included.
