Dublin Airport: Taxi or private transfer?

Last updated: March 2026

Dublin has one unique factor that matters here: traffic. The city is notorious for congestion, and it directly affects how much a taxi costs. Let's break this down.

Price comparison

| Destination | Taxi (good traffic) | Taxi (rush hour) | Transfer (fixed) | |---|---|---|---| | City center | 30-38 EUR | 40-50 EUR | 35-50 EUR | | Temple Bar | 32-40 EUR | 42-55 EUR | 38-52 EUR | | St. Stephen's Green | 35-45 EUR | 45-60 EUR | 40-55 EUR | | Docklands | 32-42 EUR | 42-55 EUR | 38-52 EUR | | Ballsbridge | 38-50 EUR | 50-65 EUR | 42-55 EUR |

In good traffic, taxis are cheaper. During rush hour, transfers win because the fixed price doesn't care about traffic.

The Dublin traffic factor

This is the biggest consideration. Dublin's traffic problems are real:

  • Morning rush (7-9:30 AM): M1 into the city crawls. What should be 25 minutes becomes 45-60 minutes
  • Evening rush (4-7 PM): Similar delays, especially around the airport approach roads
  • School runs: Adds congestion even outside peak hours
  • Events: Croke Park matches, concerts at the Aviva/3Arena can gridlock entire areas
A taxi meter runs at about 0.45 EUR per minute while in traffic. That adds up fast during a 20-minute traffic jam.

A transfer charges the same fixed price whether the drive takes 20 minutes or 50 minutes. That certainty is worth something.

When the taxi wins

  • Off-peak travel (10 AM - 3 PM, or late evening) — roads are clear, meter stays reasonable
  • Quick trips — if you're going to Drumcondra or nearby north Dublin, the taxi is cheap and fast
  • No planning needed — walk out, join the queue, go
Dublin taxi drivers are mostly friendly and chatty. The cars are well-maintained (Toyota Avensis, Skoda Superb, various saloons). They know the city.

When the transfer wins

  • Rush hour arrivals — the fixed price protects you from traffic-inflated fares
  • Families — child seats available, minivan option, driver helps with luggage
  • Groups of 3+ — a minivan transfer at 55-75 EUR beats cramming into a saloon taxi
  • Going south — destinations like Bray, Wicklow, or Killiney are longer trips where fixed pricing matters more
  • Airport pickup with tracking — your driver adjusts for flight delays automatically
  • Certainty — you know the price before landing. With Dublin traffic, the taxi fare is a gamble

Free Now (MyTaxi) and ride apps

The Free Now app (formerly MyTaxi) works well in Dublin and lets you book a taxi in advance. Uber also operates but uses licensed taxi drivers in Ireland — prices are similar to regular taxis. These apps are good alternatives to the taxi rank.

Our honest take

Dublin's traffic makes this decision different from most cities. If you arrive during off-peak hours, a taxi is fine — cheaper and easy. If you arrive during rush hour or don't want to gamble on traffic, a transfer with a fixed price is the safer bet. The price difference is small (5-10 EUR), but the peace of mind during Dublin's gridlock is real.

And don't forget: the Aircoach at 7 EUR might be all you need if you're traveling light.
