Arriving at Djerba Airport Late at Night

Last updated: March 2026

Djerba Zarzis Airport handles a high proportion of charter flights that arrive between 22:00 and 02:00. If your flight lands late, here is what to expect.

What is open after midnight

The terminal stays operational for scheduled and charter arrivals. Immigration and customs function as normal regardless of the hour. However, other services wind down:

  • Currency exchange counters typically close by 23:00, sometimes earlier.
  • ATMs are available 24 hours in theory, but they occasionally run out of cash during busy charter nights.
  • Car rental desks close by 22:00–23:00. If you need a rental car, arrange after-hours pickup in advance.
  • Food and drinks — the small terminal cafe closes early evening. Bring water and snacks.

Taxi availability at night

This is the main concern. During the day, the taxi rank at DJE has a steady flow of cars. After midnight, the picture changes. A handful of taxis wait for late flights, but when a 200-passenger charter empties and 40 groups want taxis simultaneously, the math does not work.

Expect to wait 15–30 minutes for a taxi if you are not among the first out. On very late nights (after 01:00), you might wait longer. Drivers know demand is high and may quote higher fares — a 20–30% premium over daytime rates is common and, frankly, fair given the hour.

Why pre-booking matters for late flights

A pre-booked transfer eliminates the only real risk of a late Djerba arrival: standing outside a small airport at 01:30 hoping a taxi appears. Your driver monitors your flight, adjusts for delays, and waits with your name at arrivals. The price — around 30–40 EUR to the hotel zone — is set at booking and does not change regardless of the hour.

For package tourists, the hotel shuttle handles this. For independent travelers, a private transfer is the practical choice for flights landing after 22:00.

The late-night drive

Djerba at night is quiet and safe. The roads between the airport and the main hotel areas are well-paved and lightly trafficked. The drive to Houmt Souk takes 10–12 minutes, to the Midoun zone about 15–20 minutes. Street lighting exists on main roads but thins out on secondary routes.

Practical tips for late arrivals

  • Withdraw cash before your trip or at your departure airport. Do not rely on DJE ATMs after midnight.
  • Confirm your hotel's late check-in policy. Most resort hotels accommodate late arrivals, but smaller guesthouses may need advance notice.
  • Have your booking confirmation accessible offline. Mobile data may not work until you get a local SIM the next day.
  • Carry the hotel address in French or Arabic to show your taxi driver if needed.
