Traveling Through Charleroi Airport with Family and Kids

Last updated: March 2026

Charleroi is a small, no-frills budget airport. The good news for families: everything is compact and walkable. The challenge: getting to Brussels with children and bags requires some thought.

Inside the terminal

The terminal is single-level and straightforward. After collecting luggage, you walk directly to the arrivals area. Trolleys are available. Baby-changing facilities are in the restrooms, though they are basic. There is no dedicated family lounge or nursing room, but the compact layout means you are never far from an exit.

A few cafes and shops are available if you need snacks or water for the kids before heading out.

The Brussels journey with children

The core question for most families is whether to take the Flibco shuttle or book a private transfer.

| Factor | Flibco Shuttle | Private Transfer | |--------|---------------|------------------| | Cost | EUR 17/adult, kids under 12 discounted | EUR 90–140 total | | Duration | ~55 min | ~50–60 min | | Luggage | Stored underneath, you load/unload | Driver handles it | | Car seat | Not available | Can be requested | | Destination | Bruxelles-Midi station only | Your hotel door | | Comfort with kids | Manageable but busy | Relaxed |

The shuttle works if you have one child, moderate luggage, and your hotel is near Bruxelles-Midi or easy to reach by metro. But the reality of unloading at a busy train station, finding the metro, and managing a stroller plus suitcases in the Brussels public transport system is exhausting — especially after a flight.

A private transfer in a minivan at EUR 120–140 takes you from terminal to hotel door. For families with two or more children, this is often worth the extra cost.

Car seats

Belgian law requires appropriate child restraints. However, taxis at the rank rarely have them. Shuttle buses do not have them at all. Your options:

  • Bring your own travel car seat or booster — the most reliable approach
  • Request a car seat when booking a private transfer — most reputable providers can arrange this for free or a small fee
  • For the shuttle bus, children sit in regular seats with seatbelts

Practical tips for families

  • The terminal is air-conditioned but the bus queue outside can be long and exposed — in winter, dress kids warmly for the wait
  • Have snacks and entertainment ready for the 55-minute shuttle ride
  • If booking a transfer, specify the number and ages of children so the right vehicle is assigned
  • Strollers can go under the shuttle bus, but you unload them yourself at Bruxelles-Midi
  • Consider a return transfer as well — navigating Midi station to the shuttle bus stop with children and luggage is equally challenging
