How Much Does It Cost from Chiang Mai Airport to the City?

Last updated: March 2026

Chiang Mai Airport is only 4 km from the Old City, making it one of the cheapest airport-to-city transfers in Asia. Here is what you should realistically expect to pay in 2026.

Price breakdown by destination

| Destination | Taxi (metered + surcharge) | Grab | Private transfer | |-------------|---------------------------|------|------------------| | Old City / Tha Phae Gate | 200–250 THB (5–7 EUR) | 120–200 THB (3–5 EUR) | 350–450 THB (9–12 EUR) | | Nimmanhaemin | 180–230 THB (5–6 EUR) | 110–180 THB (3–5 EUR) | 350–450 THB (9–12 EUR) | | Night Bazaar area | 170–220 THB (4.50–6 EUR) | 100–170 THB (3–4.50 EUR) | 350–400 THB (9–10 EUR) | | Doi Suthep base | 250–350 THB (7–9 EUR) | 200–300 THB (5–8 EUR) | 500–700 THB (13–18 EUR) | | Hang Dong / Royal Flora | 300–400 THB (8–11 EUR) | 250–350 THB (7–9 EUR) | 500–650 THB (13–17 EUR) |

All metered taxi prices include the mandatory 50 THB airport surcharge. Grab prices fluctuate with demand — expect higher fares during festivals and between 22:00 and 06:00.

Hidden costs to watch for

Tollways: There are no toll roads between the airport and central Chiang Mai.

Surge pricing: Grab can surge 30–50% during Songkran (April) and Yi Peng (November). Metered taxis do not surge, but finding one becomes harder.

Cash requirement: Taxis are cash only. ATMs in the arrivals hall charge 220 THB per withdrawal for foreign cards. Withdraw enough for your taxi and first day to avoid multiple fees.

What is actually the cheapest option?

The cheapest ride is a songthaew (red shared truck) at 30–40 THB per person, but they are unreliable from the airport itself. If you walk to the main road (about 300 metres), you can flag one down. For most travellers, Grab offers the best value with transparent pricing and air conditioning.

Is a private transfer worth it?

At 350–500 THB (9–13 EUR), a private transfer costs roughly double a Grab ride. The premium buys you a named driver waiting at arrivals, guaranteed vehicle size, and no app dependency. For solo travellers to the Old City, it is an unnecessary luxury. For families or late-night arrivals, the extra 4–6 EUR is easy to justify.
