Why there are no taxis at Bora Bora Airport
Bora Bora Airport sits on Motu Mute, a small islet with no road connection to the main island. There are no taxis, no buses, and no rideshare apps at the airport. The only way to reach Bora Bora is by boat. Your comparison is between the airport shuttle to Vaitape, your resort's private boat, or a hired private transfer.
The airport shuttle boat
The shuttle runs from the airport dock to Vaitape, the main village on Bora Bora, and takes 15-20 minutes. It is timed to meet incoming flights, so there is no schedule to worry about — it leaves after passengers from each flight have collected their bags.
The key point: the shuttle goes with your air ticket, not with your wallet. Air Moana says it plainly — it provides "a free shuttle boat service between the airport and the Vaitape village dock" to passengers holding its tickets, and no booking is needed because the passenger list is sent to the boat captains automatically. Only its ticketed passengers may use it. Check what your own airline includes when you book your flight; that is the question that determines whether you pay anything at all.
The boat is basic but comfortable and covered. Staff help with luggage. The downside is that it only goes to Vaitape. If your hotel is elsewhere on the island, you need a taxi from Vaitape — and those are not metered, so agree the fare before you get in.
Resort shuttle boats
Most resorts send their own boats to meet guests. These range from simple motorboats to sleek covered launches at luxury properties. Some include the transfer in the room rate; others charge separately, usually per person each way, at a rate the property sets. Confirm it at booking.
The advantage is door-to-dock service directly to your resort, luggage handling, and a welcome experience that starts immediately. For overwater bungalow resorts on separate motus, the resort boat is often the only practical option.
