Bora Bora Airport: Public Shuttle vs Private Boat Transfer

Last updated: March 2026

Why there are no taxis at Bora Bora Airport

Bora Bora Airport sits on Motu Mute, a small islet with no road connection to the main island. There are no taxis, no buses, and no rideshare apps at the airport. The only way to reach Bora Bora is by boat. Your comparison is between the public Air Tahiti shuttle, your resort's private boat, or a hired private transfer.

Air Tahiti shuttle boat

The Air Tahiti shuttle runs from the airport dock to Vaitape, the main village on Bora Bora. It costs 700 XPF (~6 EUR) per person and takes 15-20 minutes. The shuttle is timed to meet incoming flights, so there is no schedule to worry about — it leaves after passengers from each flight have collected their bags.

The boat is basic but comfortable and covered. Staff help with luggage. The downside is that it only goes to Vaitape. If your hotel is elsewhere on the island, you need a taxi from Vaitape, adding 1,000-3,000 XPF (8-25 EUR) and 10-20 minutes.

Resort shuttle boats

Most resorts send their own boats to meet guests. These range from simple motorboats to sleek covered launches at luxury properties. Some include the transfer in the room rate; others charge 3,000-8,000 XPF (25-67 EUR) per person each way.

The advantage is door-to-dock service directly to your resort, luggage handling, and a welcome experience that starts immediately. For overwater bungalow resorts on separate motus, the resort boat is often the only practical option.

Private boat transfer

Independent boat operators offer private transfers for 5,000-15,000 XPF (42-125 EUR) depending on distance and boat type. This makes sense if your accommodation does not have its own shuttle, or if you want flexibility on timing.

Side-by-side comparison

| Factor | Air Tahiti shuttle | Resort shuttle | Private boat | |--------|-------------------|---------------|-------------| | Cost per person | 700 XPF (~6 EUR) | 0-8,000 XPF (0-67 EUR) | 5,000-15,000 XPF (42-125 EUR) | | Destination | Vaitape only | Your resort dock | Flexible | | Luggage handling | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Booking required | No | Yes, via resort | Yes | | Wait time | Departs after flight | Departs after flight | On your schedule |

Which one to choose

Take the shuttle if: you are staying in Vaitape or nearby, are budget-conscious, and do not mind a short taxi ride to your hotel.

Use the resort boat if: you are at a resort (which most Bora Bora visitors are). Contact them before arrival to arrange it.

Book a private boat if: your accommodation has no shuttle, you are staying on a private motu, or you prefer a more personal experience.

One important note

Do not arrive without a boat transfer plan. There is no backup option at the airport — no road, no bridge, no alternative. If your resort boat does not show and the Air Tahiti shuttle has left, you will need to find a private operator at the dock, which may not be available on short notice.
