Brisbane Airport with Kids — Getting to the City as a Family

Last updated: March 2026

Brisbane Airport is family-friendly, modern, and well-organized. Both terminals have the facilities you need. The main challenge is ground transport with child seats — a common issue across Australia.

Queensland child restraint laws

Queensland law is strict about child restraints:

  • Under 6 months: rear-facing baby capsule
  • 6 months to under 4 years: rear-facing or forward-facing seat with harness
  • 4 to under 7 years: forward-facing seat with harness or booster seat
  • 7+ years: booster seat recommended, seat belt required
Here is the catch: taxis and rideshares (Uber/DiDi) are legally exempt from these requirements in Queensland. Children can ride in them without a dedicated seat. However, most parents understandably prefer to have proper restraints.

Your child seat options

| Transport | Child seat? | Notes | |-----------|------------|-------| | Private transfer | Yes, on request | Specify age and weight at booking | | Rental car | Yes, from rental desk | Usually AUD 10-15/day extra | | Taxi | Exempt from law | No seats available | | Uber/DiDi | Exempt from law | No seats available | | Airtrain | N/A | No seats needed on trains |

If child seats matter to you, a pre-booked transfer or rental car are your only options.

Airtrain with kids

The Airtrain works for families with older children who can walk and sit independently. Children under 5 ride free, and ages 5-14 pay a reduced fare of about AUD 11 (half the adult AUD 22).

With babies or toddlers in strollers, the Airtrain is manageable but not ideal. Stations have lifts, but train carriages during peak hours can be crowded. If you have a stroller plus luggage, you will be juggling.

Best transport for families

| Scenario | Recommended | Approximate cost | |----------|-------------|------------------| | 2 adults + baby + car seat needed | Transfer sedan | AUD 80-100 (EUR 48-60) | | 2 adults + 2 kids + lots of luggage | Transfer minivan | AUD 100-140 (EUR 60-84) | | 2 adults + older kids (8+), light bags | Airtrain | AUD 55-66 total (EUR 33-40) | | Large family, Gold Coast destination | Transfer minivan | AUD 150-200 (EUR 90-120) |

Airport facilities for families

Both terminals offer:

  • Baby change rooms in multiple locations
  • Family restrooms with extra space
  • Lifts to all levels including Airtrain stations
  • Trolleys at baggage claim
  • Nursing rooms in the international terminal
The walk from arrivals to transport is short at both terminals — well under 5 minutes to the taxi rank, slightly more to the Airtrain station.

Tips for families

  • Book a transfer with car seats if your children are under 7. Do not rely on the taxi exemption if safety is your priority.
  • Buy Airtrain return tickets if you plan to take the train both ways — AUD 36 return versus AUD 22 each way.
  • Brisbane's heat can be intense, especially October through March. Have water ready for kids and minimize outdoor waiting time.
  • Consider the Gold Coast option carefully. The Airtrain-plus-tram route takes 90 minutes, which may be too long with small children. A transfer gets you there in about an hour with everyone seated comfortably.
