BKO - Bamako

Bamako Airport with Kids and Family – What to Know

Last updated: March 2026

Traveling to Bamako with children requires some extra planning, particularly for the airport transfer. BKO is a small airport with limited facilities, and the transport options are basic compared to larger hubs.

The terminal experience

Bamako-Senou has a single terminal. After landing, immigration can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. There is no dedicated family lane. The baggage area is compact, and luggage carts are sometimes available but not guaranteed. There are no dedicated baby-changing rooms — restrooms are basic. If your child needs a bottle or snack after landing, bring it with you as the airport has very limited food options in the arrivals area.

Getting a vehicle that fits your family

Standard Bamako taxis are compact sedans, often older models. Fitting two adults, two children, and luggage into one can be uncomfortable or impossible if you have large bags. There are no taxi minivans waiting at the airport.

A pre-booked transfer solves this problem. You can request:

| Vehicle type | Capacity | Price to city center | |-------------|----------|---------------------| | Sedan | 2 adults + 1–2 small children | 18,000–22,000 XOF (28–34 EUR) | | SUV / minivan | 2 adults + 2–3 children + luggage | 25,000–35,000 XOF (38–53 EUR) |

Child seats

Regular taxis in Bamako do not carry child seats. If your child needs one, your only option is to pre-book a transfer and specifically request the seat type you need — infant, toddler, or booster. Confirm this at least 48 hours before arrival, as availability depends on the local provider.

Alternatively, if you are bringing a portable travel car seat, that works in any vehicle.

The road to the city

The drive from BKO to central Bamako is about 15 km on a paved highway. The road is generally in decent condition, but some sections can be bumpy. During the dry season (November to May), dust is noticeable. Keep windows closed and air conditioning on if available.

Traffic in Bamako can be congested, especially around the bridge crossings. The ride can take 25–45 minutes depending on the time of day.

Practical tips for families

  • Bring water and snacks for the kids — airport options are very limited
  • Have your hotel address written down in French to show the driver
  • Keep small XOF bills ready for the fare — drivers rarely have change
  • Book a larger vehicle if you have a stroller or more than two large bags
  • Travel during cooler hours if possible — Bamako temperatures often exceed 35 degrees Celsius
With a bit of preparation, the BKO airport transfer is manageable with children. The ride is short, and once you are in the city, the logistics get easier.
