Late Arrivals at Bharatpur Airport

Bharatpur Airport (BHR) does not operate at night. There are no runway lights or instrument approach systems, so all flights land during daylight hours. The last scheduled flights typically arrive by late afternoon.

What this means for you

You will not land at BHR after dark. However, if your flight is delayed significantly, you could arrive in the late afternoon and then face the 30-45 minute drive to Sauraha as daylight fades. This is not a safety concern — the road is fine to drive at any hour — but the last stretch is rural and unlit.

Flight delays and cancellations

Domestic flights in Nepal are frequently delayed or cancelled, especially during monsoon season and in winter when morning fog is common. If your flight is delayed:

• Stay at the departure airport (usually Kathmandu) and wait for the rescheduled flight
• If cancelled, the airline typically rebooks you on the next available flight
• In the worst case, the overland drive from Kathmandu to Bharatpur takes about 5-6 hours by tourist bus or private car

Always have your lodge's phone number handy so you can update them on delays. They will adjust your pickup accordingly.

Arriving at your lodge after dark

If your flight lands late in the afternoon and the drive to your lodge pushes your arrival to dusk or early evening, this is normal. Lodges in the Chitwan area are accustomed to late arrivals. Your room will be ready, and dinner is usually available.

Some lodges near Sauraha are accessed by a short canoe ride across the Rapti River. If you arrive after dark, the lodge typically arranges a vehicle to drive around to the bridge instead. Confirm this with your lodge.

Backup plan: overland from Kathmandu

If flights are cancelled entirely (which happens), you can take a tourist bus from Kathmandu to Sauraha. These run daily, depart in the morning, and arrive in the early afternoon. It is a long ride but scenic. Private vehicles can be hired as well, costing around $80-$120 USD for the trip.

The bottom line: you will not deal with a true late-night airport arrival at BHR. The challenges here are flight delays and cancellations, which are best handled with flexibility and a backup overland plan.
