Bermuda Airport to Hamilton: what you actually need to know

L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA) is located at the eastern tip of Bermuda, about 17 km from Hamilton, the capital. There is no rail or shuttle bus service. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are the standard options. A taxi to Hamilton costs approximately USD 40-55 (EUR 37-50) and takes 30-40 minutes. Bermuda is expensive, and transport is no exception.

Bermuda's airport is small and straightforward. There is one terminal building serving all flights. Immigration can be slow during peak times when multiple flights land from the US, UK, and Canada within a short window. Bermuda requires all visitors to complete an arrival card and may ask about your accommodation. The process typically takes 15-30 minutes but can stretch longer during busy periods.

Baggage claim is a single belt in a compact hall. Once you have your bags, customs is brief for most travellers. You walk out into a small arrivals area with a tourist information desk. The exit leads directly to the taxi stand and parking area. There is no long terminal walk or confusing layout.

Pre-booked private transfers are available through local operators. A sedan transfer to Hamilton runs USD 55-80 (EUR 50-73). The main advantage is guaranteed availability and fixed pricing. Bermuda occasionally has taxi shortages, especially when several flights arrive simultaneously.

Public buses do not serve the airport directly. The nearest bus stop is a 15-minute walk away on Blue Hole Hill, which is not practical with luggage.

Minibuses operate informally and can sometimes be arranged, but they are not a reliable airport option.

Rental cars are not available in Bermuda. The island does not allow tourists to rent cars. You can rent electric scooters (Twizy-style vehicles) from some locations, but not at the airport and not for airport transfers.

Hotel shuttles are offered by some larger resort hotels, particularly in Tucker's Town and along the south shore. Check with your hotel before arrival.

Bermuda uses the Bermudian Dollar (BMD), which is pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar. USD is accepted everywhere.

Taxi surcharges apply: USD 1 per large piece of luggage, 25% surcharge between 10 PM and 6 AM, and on Sundays and public holidays. These add up quickly for families.

Most international flights to Bermuda arrive during the afternoon or evening. Very late arrivals are uncommon but do happen. Taxis operate around the clock, but availability after 10 PM can be limited. The airport taxi dispatcher will call for vehicles if the rank is empty, but waits of 15-20 minutes are possible. The 25% night surcharge applies after 10 PM. Pre-booked transfers are strongly recommended for late flights to avoid waiting. The airport terminal does not stay open late, so there is little shelter if you are stranded.

Bermuda taxis are mostly regular sedans or minivans. Larger groups can request a van taxi, which seats up to six passengers. Child seats are not standard in Bermuda taxis and are not legally required. If you need one, a pre-booked transfer provider is more likely to accommodate. With the per-bag surcharge on taxis, a family with four suitcases pays USD 4 (EUR 3.60) extra on top of the metered fare. The road from the airport to Hamilton is scenic but narrow and winding in places. The ride takes 30-40 minutes regardless of the vehicle.

The taxi stand is directly outside the arrivals exit. Taxis queue in order and a dispatcher may be present during busy periods. Pre-booked transfer drivers typically wait just outside the arrivals door with a name sign. The area is small and easy to navigate. There is no multi-level terminal or confusing pickup zone. You walk out the door and the cars are right there.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you want guaranteed availability, have a large group or heavy luggage, need a child seat, or are arriving late in the evening.

Check for a hotel shuttle if you are staying at a larger resort, particularly in Tucker's Town, Southampton, or the south shore.

Be prepared to wait if multiple flights have just landed. Bermuda has a limited taxi fleet, and peak arrival times can create temporary shortages.
