Taxi vs private transfer from Bermuda Airport

Last updated: March 2026

With no Uber, no rental cars, and no airport bus in Bermuda, the choice comes down to taking a taxi from the rank or booking a private transfer in advance. Both get you to the same place, but the experience and cost differ.

Side-by-side comparison

| Factor | Taxi | Pre-booked transfer | |---|---|---| | Price to Hamilton | USD 40-55 (EUR 37-50) | USD 55-80 (EUR 50-73) | | Booking required | No | Yes | | Meet and greet | No | Yes, inside arrivals | | Vehicle choice | Assigned at rank | Sedan, van, or minibus | | Child seats | Rarely available | On request | | Night surcharge | 25% after 10 PM | Usually included | | Luggage charge | USD 1 per bag | Included | | Availability guarantee | No | Yes |

The taxi availability problem

Bermuda has a limited taxi fleet. When two or three flights land within the same hour, the airport taxi rank can empty out quickly. Waits of 15-20 minutes happen during peak arrival times. The airport dispatcher will radio for more taxis, but there are simply not many on the island. During quieter periods, taxis are usually available immediately.

This is the strongest argument for pre-booking. If your flight lands during a busy window (typically 2-6 PM when US flights cluster), having a driver guaranteed means you are not standing at a rank hoping a taxi appears.

When a taxi works fine

If you are a solo traveller or couple with manageable luggage arriving during a quiet window, the taxi is straightforward. Walk out, get in, and go. Bermuda taxi drivers are generally friendly and knowledgeable. The metered system is transparent. For a trip to St. George's (just 3 km away), a taxi is the obvious choice at USD 10-15 (EUR 9-14).

When to book a transfer

Pre-booked transfers make sense for families (child seats), groups (guaranteed vehicle size), late arrivals (no waiting at an empty rank), and trips to the far western parishes where the fare is substantial and you want a fixed quote. The transfer price includes luggage and night surcharges, so the effective premium over a taxi is smaller than it first appears. A family arriving Sunday evening with four bags might pay USD 65 (EUR 59) by taxi after surcharges, versus USD 75 (EUR 68) for a transfer with everything included.

Bottom line

In most destinations, the taxi is clearly cheaper and the transfer is a luxury. In Bermuda, the gap is narrower because of taxi surcharges and availability concerns. If availability were guaranteed, the taxi would win on price every time. Since it is not, the transfer is worth considering for anyone who values certainty over saving USD 15-20 (EUR 14-18).
