ASU - Asuncion

Asuncion airport: taxi vs private transfer compared

Last updated: March 2026

The two main ways to get from Silvio Pettirossi Airport to Asuncion are the airport taxi counter and a pre-booked private transfer. Both get you there in the same time. Here is what differs.

Price comparison

| Factor | Airport taxi | Pre-booked transfer | |--------|-------------|--------------------| | Price to centre | PYG 120,000-180,000 / EUR 14-21 | PYG 180,000-300,000 / EUR 21-35 | | Price to suburbs | PYG 150,000-250,000 / EUR 17-29 | PYG 250,000-400,000 / EUR 29-47 | | Night surcharge | No | No | | Payment | Cash (PYG preferred) | Prepaid or card |

The taxi counter is cheaper. The transfer costs more but includes services that the taxi does not.

What you get with each

Airport taxi: You go to the counter inside arrivals, state your destination, and pay a fixed fare. You receive a receipt and are assigned a specific vehicle outside. The system is regulated and transparent. Vehicles are standard sedans, generally clean but not luxury. Drivers speak Spanish (and often Guarani) but rarely English.

Pre-booked transfer: A driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Your flight is tracked for delays. The vehicle is reserved specifically for you. You get help with luggage and a direct ride to your destination. Child seats can be arranged. English-speaking drivers are often available upon request. The price is fixed at booking.

When a taxi makes more sense

  • You are a solo traveller or couple with standard luggage
  • You are comfortable with basic Spanish or can show your hotel address
  • You want to pay less and do not need extras
  • You arrived without pre-planning your transport
  • You are heading to central Asuncion

When a transfer makes more sense

  • You do not speak Spanish and want an English-speaking driver
  • You are travelling with children and need car seats
  • You have heavy or bulky luggage that needs a specific vehicle size
  • You are arriving late at night
  • You are heading somewhere outside central Asuncion
  • You want the certainty of someone waiting for you

Safety considerations

The airport taxi counter system is safe and well-regulated. Drivers are registered and the fixed-fare system prevents overcharging. Do not accept rides from drivers who approach you inside the terminal; always use the counter.

Pre-booked transfers are equally safe, often with tracked vehicles and company accountability. For solo female travellers or first-time visitors to Paraguay, the added accountability of a pre-booked service can provide peace of mind.

A note about rideshares

Bolt and Uber operate in Asuncion and are cheaper than both taxis and transfers. However, airport pickup can be confusing (drivers may not know the designated area), and availability is inconsistent. If you choose a rideshare, be patient and communicate with your driver about the pickup location.

The honest verdict

The airport taxi counter is a solid, safe, and affordable system. For most travellers heading to central Asuncion, it is the practical choice. A pre-booked transfer is worth the premium if you need specific arrangements (child seats, large vehicle, English driver) or want the comfort of a guaranteed driver at arrivals. The price difference in Paraguay is modest enough that either option represents good value.
