Adelaide Airport with kids: what families need to know

Last updated: March 2026

Adelaide is a great family destination — relaxed pace, beautiful beaches, wine regions for the parents. Getting from the airport is easy, with one important caveat: child seats.

The child seat situation in South Australia

Australian law is strict about child restraints:

  • Under 6 months: Rear-facing baby capsule
  • 6 months to 4 years: Rear-facing or forward-facing child seat
  • 4 to 7 years: Forward-facing child seat or booster
Taxis are exempt from these requirements in South Australia. So legally, your child can sit in a taxi without a car seat. But legally OK doesn't mean safe.

Your options: 1. Pre-booked transfer with child seats — request the right type when booking 2. Bring your own — install it in a taxi or rental car 3. Rent a car — add child seats to the rental (AUD $10-15/day per seat) 4. Take the taxi without one — legal for taxis, but not recommended for longer trips

The airport experience

Adelaide Airport is one of Australia's easiest airports to navigate with kids:

  • Single terminal — you can't get lost
  • Short distances — gate to exit in 10 minutes
  • Family restrooms with changing facilities
  • Free trolleys in baggage claim
  • A small playground in the departures area (good to know for return flights)
  • Compact and uncrowded — no chaotic terminals
Strollers are collected at the oversized baggage belt near the main carousel.

Transport options for families

Taxi — works for older kids

If your children are over 7 (no car seat needed), a taxi is the simplest option. AUD $25-35 to the CBD, 15-20 minutes. Taxis handle 2-3 bags and 4 passengers. The rank is right outside arrivals — no walking.

Pre-booked transfer — best for young kids

A transfer with child seats is the practical family choice:

  • Sedan to CBD: €20-30 (up to 3 passengers)
  • Minivan to CBD: €30-45 (up to 6-7 passengers, more luggage space)
  • Child seats: Included on request, no extra charge with most providers

Uber — not great for car seats

Uber doesn't offer car seat options in Adelaide. You'd need to bring your own and install it, which is awkward. Fine for older kids, not practical for toddlers.

JetBus — possible but tight

The $5.80 bus works for a family if kids are old enough to sit independently and you have minimal luggage. With strollers and bags, it's a squeeze.

Going to Glenelg Beach with kids?

Glenelg is Adelaide's family beach, about 10 km from the airport:

  • Taxi: AUD $30-40
  • Transfer: €25-35
  • The beach has shallow water, a jetty, and plenty of fish and chip shops

Going to the Adelaide Hills or wine regions?

If you're heading to Hahndorf (German village, great for kids), Mount Lofty, or wine regions:

  • Rent a car at the airport — you'll want flexibility
  • Transfer: €40-75 depending on exact destination
  • Adelaide Hills attractions are spread out, so a car is practically essential

Family tips

  • Sunscreen: Adelaide sun is harsh, even in spring/autumn. Apply before leaving the terminal.
  • Water: Buy bottles at the airport. Adelaide gets hot and kids dehydrate quickly.
  • Jetlag from Asia: If arriving from Southeast Asia, the time difference is 2-5 hours. Kids adjust faster than you'd expect.
  • Free tram: Adelaide has a free tram between the CBD and Glenelg. Great for families on a budget once you're in the city.
