Abuja Airport is about 40 km from the city center, and transport costs depend heavily on which option you choose and when you arrive.
Official airport taxi
The taxi desk inside the arrivals terminal has fixed prices displayed on a board, listed by destination — Central Area/CBD, Wuse, Maitama, Garki, Jabi/Utako and so on. These are non-negotiable and generally fair.
We do not reproduce the fares here. They are revised as fuel costs and the naira move, and a stale copy of that board is worse than no copy: it reads like a fact and it is not. The board at the desk is the authoritative price for that day — read it when you arrive rather than budgeting from a figure published anywhere else.
You pay at the desk and receive a receipt. The driver is assigned to you — no negotiation needed.
Ride-hailing apps (Bolt, inDrive)
Bolt is the most reliable app in Abuja, and it is normally meaningfully cheaper than the official desk for the same trip. Because the app prices each ride dynamically, the quote you are shown before you confirm is the fare — there is no fixed rate to publish, and it rises during surge.
The practical move is to open the app while you are still inside, compare its quote against the desk board a few metres away, and pick. That comparison is reliable on the day; a printed price is not.
Catch: Driver availability at the airport is inconsistent. You may wait 10-20 minutes, and some drivers cancel when they see the airport pickup location. Surge pricing applies during rush hours.
Unofficial taxis
Drivers waiting outside the terminal quote below the desk price for city centre rides, and you must negotiate — there is no meter and no tariff behind the number. Expect the opening quote to be well above what the trip is worth, and use the desk board inside as your benchmark before you start. Quality of vehicles varies — inspect before committing.

- Night premium: Unofficial taxis charge noticeably more late at night, when they know your options are thin. Official desk prices stay the same.
- Currency confusion: The naira rate fluctuates significantly. Check the current rate before exchanging money at the airport — bureau de change rates are usually worse than in the city.
