Getting from Abuja Airport with kids and family

Last updated: March 2026

Traveling through Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport with children is manageable but requires some planning, especially for transport.

The airport experience with kids

ABV is a relatively small, single-level airport. Immigration can take 15-30 minutes — bring snacks and entertainment for restless kids. The baggage area is compact and close to the exit. There are restrooms with baby-changing facilities before you exit arrivals.

The arrivals hall can feel overwhelming if multiple flights arrive together, with taxi touts competing for attention. Walk past them to the official taxi desk or look for your pre-booked transfer driver.

Transport options for families

Pre-booked SUV or minivan is the best option for families. You get a larger vehicle with space for strollers, car seats, and luggage. The driver meets you inside and helps with bags. Request a child seat when booking — they are available but not automatic.

Official taxis are standard sedans. They fit 2 adults + 2 kids with moderate luggage. No child seats are available. If you have a stroller plus multiple suitcases, a standard taxi will be tight.

Bolt sends whatever vehicle is available — you cannot request a specific size. Not ideal if you need space for a family setup.

Child seats

Child seat laws are not enforced in Nigeria, and almost no taxis carry them. If your child needs a car seat:

  • Bring your own travel car seat
  • Request one through a pre-booked transfer service (confirm availability)
  • Use a rear-facing infant carrier that you bring from home

Luggage considerations

| Setup | Recommended vehicle | |---|---| | 2 adults + 1 child + 2 bags | Standard sedan | | 2 adults + 2 children + 3 bags | SUV | | 2 adults + 3 children + 4+ bags | Minivan | | Stroller + multiple bags | SUV or minivan |

Porters are available at baggage claim for NGN 500-1,000 per bag. Worth it if you are managing kids and luggage simultaneously.

Tips for the ride

The 30-50 minute drive to the city center is on a modern expressway. Roads are smooth. If kids get motion-sick, the drive should be fine — it is mostly straight highway with minimal stops.

Bring water bottles — it can be very hot in Abuja, and vehicles may take a few minutes to cool down with air conditioning.
