Getting from Thessaloniki Airport to the City or Halkidiki

Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport is 15 km east of the city centre. The public bus (Line 01X) costs 2 EUR (the OSETH special-line fare) and runs every 20-30 minutes into the city — it is reliable and the right choice for solo or budget travellers. A taxi is metered and takes 25-35 minutes — check the current Greek taxi tariff before you travel, as it is revised periodically. Halkidiki is the three-fingered peninsula southeast of Thessaloniki. The three fingers — Kassandra (the most touristic), Sithonia (more rugged and scenic), and Athos (partly a monastic state) — have different distances from the airport.

There is no direct bus from SKG to Halkidiki. KTEL buses to Halkidiki depart from the central bus station in Thessaloniki, so using public transport involves the bus to the city first, then a second bus to the peninsula — adding 1.5-2 hours to your journey with luggage.

For Halkidiki travellers, a pre-booked transfer is the sensible option. You are collected from arrivals and driven directly to your resort. For Kassandra (1.5-2 hours), Sithonia (2-2.5 hours), or Ouranoupoli (1.5-2 hours), this is a significant journey — having it confirmed before you travel reduces the stress considerably.

The bus service runs until around midnight, which covers most evening flights. Very late arrivals (past midnight) will find taxis available at the rank — Thessaloniki is a large city with a functioning taxi supply that does not dry up the way a small island's does.
