Luxembourg Airport Transfer Guide

Luxembourg Airport (LUX) is just 6 km from the city centre, making it one of the most conveniently located airports in Europe. A pre-booked private transfer takes 10-20 minutes; the price is set by each provider and fixed when you book. Taxi fares are not regulated in Luxembourg — every operator sets its own tariff — so check the price grid displayed in the taxi window before you get in. The best part: all public transport in Luxembourg is free, so the number 16 bus to the city centre costs nothing. It takes about 25 minutes.

Luxembourg Airport has a single terminal that is compact and well-organised. For flights within the Schengen area, there is no passport control, so you go straight to baggage reclaim. For non-Schengen arrivals, immigration is usually fast given the airport's modest size. Baggage reclaim is small with just a few belts, and waits are typically short.

Once through, you enter the arrivals hall. There is a tourist information desk, ATMs, a few food options, and car rental counters. The exit leads directly to the bus stops, taxi rank, and pick-up area. Everything is within a 2-minute walk.

Bus (free) is Luxembourg's standout feature. Since 29 February 2020, public transport across Luxembourg — buses, trams and trains — has been free for everyone, residents and visitors alike; only first-class rail tickets still have to be paid for. Bus line 16 runs from the airport to the city centre (Gare Centrale and Hamilius) roughly every 10-15 minutes during the day. The journey takes 20-30 minutes. No ticket needed, just get on. This is a genuine, no-catch policy. Buses are modern and clean.

Taxi from the official rank runs on the meter, but the fare is not set by the state: since the 2016 taxi law, each operator fixes its own prices, and they vary noticeably between companies. Every taxi must display its tariff grid visibly — including an indicative price for a 10 km daytime journey — so read it before you get in and ask the driver to confirm the likely fare to your address. The journey takes 10-20 minutes. Taxis here are comfortable but not cheap by European standards.

Pre-booked private transfer is priced by each provider and fixed when you book. The driver meets you in arrivals and takes you directly to your hotel. For the city centre the advantage over a taxi is the certainty — a price agreed in advance and a driver waiting for you — rather than a guaranteed saving, since deregulated taxi fares vary by operator.

Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall. Luxembourg is tiny, so a rental car gives you easy access to the entire country and neighbouring regions of Belgium, France, and Germany. Parking in the city centre can be expensive though.

Tram does not reach the airport directly but connects various parts of the city centre. Once you reach Gare Centrale or Hamilius by bus, you can use the tram (also free) for onward travel.

To Luxembourg City centre: free by bus — that one is certain. Everything else in a car is not: taxi fares are deregulated and set per operator, and transfer prices are set per provider, so no published tariff exists for us to quote. The same applies to Kirchberg (also free by bus), Esch-sur-Alzette and cross-border runs to Trier, Metz, Saarbrücken, Arlon or Brussels. Get a written quote when you book a transfer, and read the tariff grid in the window before taking a taxi. Cross-border transfers to neighbouring countries are common and worth comparing between providers.

Luxembourg Airport does not handle many flights after midnight. Most arrivals wrap up by 23:00-00:00. Bus line 16 runs until about 23:30 on weekdays and later on weekends. Night bus N16 provides some coverage after regular services end. Taxis are available at the rank and can be called by phone. For flights arriving after the last bus, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is straightforward. The short distance means even late-night transport is quick and not hugely expensive.

The free bus is tempting for families, but it depends on your luggage situation. If you have light bags, the bus is fine. With multiple suitcases, a pushchair, and children, a taxi or private transfer is easier. The bus has luggage space but it is shared and not abundant during busy periods. Pre-booked transfers can provide child seats on request. The airport terminal is compact with lifts and accessible routes, so navigating with a pushchair is straightforward.

For pre-booked transfers, the driver typically waits in the arrivals hall near the exit. They hold a name sign and assist with luggage. Some meet at the designated pick-up area just outside the terminal. The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit, clearly marked. Bus stops are also right outside, with route 16 clearly signposted.

Take the free bus if you are travelling light and heading to the city centre or Kirchberg. It is hard to argue with free.

Take a taxi if you want door-to-door service without advance planning — just check the displayed tariff first, since fares differ from one operator to the next.

Book a private transfer if you are heading to a specific address outside the city centre, travelling with lots of luggage, have children who need car seats, or are continuing to Belgium, France, or Germany.
