Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 8 miles south of downtown Milwaukee. The ride takes 15-20 minutes in normal conditions, though rush hour or winter weather can stretch that to 30 minutes or more.

Most airport guides print a confident table of fares. For Milwaukee that table would be fiction, because only the bus has a published tariff. Here it is:
Bus (MCTS Route 80 and the GreenLine)
The cheapest option by far at $2.75 per ride for ages 12-64, or $1.25 for riders 65+, ages 6-11, or with a qualifying disability. Children 5 and under ride free. Pay with a WisGo card, the Umo app, contactless, or cash — though cash riders forfeit fare capping and free transfers. Route 80 connects the airport to downtown via Sixth Street, stopping on the Ticketing curb near the American/United entrance; the GreenLine stops at the Baggage roadway traffic island outside Exit 2. The trade-off is time — the ride takes 35-45 minutes with stops. Airport construction through spring 2027 has shifted the Route 80 stop, so follow the signs.
Taxi
Taxis pick up outside Baggage Claim 3 and are metered. Milwaukee licenses taxis but does not set a single citywide meter rate — operators file and post their own — so there is no official fare from MKE to downtown that we can quote you honestly. Ask the driver for an estimate to your address before you get in, and look at the rate card posted in the cab. The upside over rideshare is that a meter does not surge when Summerfest lets out.
Rideshare (Uber and Lyft)
Follow the signs near Carousel 2. Rideshare has no tariff at all: the price is whatever the app's algorithm decides at the moment you request. This is Milwaukee, where Summerfest, Brewers games, Bucks games, and winter storms all push fares up hard. Any range printed on a web page is a guess that ages badly. Open the app before you land — that quote is the only number that means anything.
Private Transfer
A pre-booked transfer is quoted and fixed when you book, so neither traffic nor a snowstorm changes what you pay. Sedans cost less than SUVs and minivans. The value is not that it is always cheapest — it is that the number is known before you fly, which none of the above can offer.
Getting to Chicago or Madison
MKE runs a free shuttle bus between the terminal and the Amtrak rail station, from Baggage Claim Door #5, every 5-10 minutes, 24 hours a day. The Amtrak Hiawatha reaches Chicago Union Station in about 90 minutes; Amtrak prices dynamically, so check amtrak.com for your date. For Madison, Badger Coaches serves the airport. Private transfers to either are quoted upfront and take roughly 90 minutes to Chicago.
What Affects the Price
Time of day matters most for rideshare. Vehicle size matters for private transfers, where a minivan for a family of five costs more than a sedan for a solo traveler. Winter weather slows everything down, and some services add a surcharge during severe conditions — ask when booking. Tolls are not a factor for most Milwaukee routes, though the Chicago run may include Illinois tollway charges.
