Unofficial taxi drivers at the airport quote foreigners higher prices. There is no metered or official fixed fare at the airport, so the price is whatever you negotiate. For longer trips to Samarkand or Bukhara by private car, get a fixed quote at booking — these are multi-hour intercity drives, not airport transfers, and pricing depends on the vehicle and current fuel costs. Most travelers take the high-speed Afrosiyob train instead, which is faster and has published fares from Uzbekistan Railways.
Currency Notes
The Uzbek Som (UZS) has large denominations. Check the current USD/UZS exchange rate before you arrive, since it moves over time — ATMs at the airport dispense UZS at the prevailing rate. Carrying a small amount of US dollars as backup is sensible, as they are widely accepted for larger transactions.
