The two are priced in fundamentally different ways, and that difference matters more than any headline number.
A taxi is metered. The City of Orlando's Vehicle-for-Hire ordinance requires every cab picking up at MCO to charge off the taximeter and does not authorise flat airport rates; the current schedule of rates and surcharges is posted inside the vehicle. You find out the total when you arrive, and it moves with traffic — the same trip costs more at 5 PM than at midnight. Tipping is expected on top at 15-20%.
A private transfer is a fixed price agreed before you fly. It does not move with traffic, demand or your flight being late.

Taxi quality at MCO is generally acceptable but inconsistent. You might get a clean, modern sedan or an older vehicle with worn seats. You have no control over this. Air conditioning works, but trunk space varies.

The Child Seat Question
