What It Costs to Get from Geneva Airport to the City and Beyond

Geneva airport has an unusual pricing structure: the trip to the city is free, but everything else reflects Swiss prices.

Geneva city center

Train: Free with the Tout Geneve ticket (pick it up in baggage claim). The 7-minute ride to Cornavin station costs nothing. This is one of the best airport-to-city deals in Europe.

Taxi: The canton of Geneva caps taxi fares from the airport at official maximums by zone: CHF 50 to the city centre on the rive droite and CHF 60 on the rive gauche, CHF 35 to the international-organisations district, and CHF 25 to the zone immediately around the airport (canton of Geneva, art. 32 of the taxi regulation). The meter must stay running on every ride and the fare cannot exceed the metered amount, so you pay whichever is lower. These maximums are revised from time to time — check ge.ch for the current ones before you travel. Only worth considering if you have heavy luggage or a specific destination away from the station.

Uber: Similar to taxi pricing. Swiss regulations keep ride-hailing costs high.

Lake Geneva destinations

Lausanne (60 km): direct train, about 45 minutes, frequent service.

Montreux (95 km): train, about 1 hour.

Nyon (25 km): train, about 15 minutes.

Swiss rail fares depend on class, age, and whether you buy a saver ticket in advance, so check sbb.ch or a station machine for the fare on your date rather than budgeting from a fixed figure. Private transfers to these towns are priced per vehicle by the operator. For Lake Geneva towns, the train is almost always the better choice unless you have specific luggage or group size needs.

Ski resorts (private transfer routes)

These routes have no official tariff — every price is set by the operator and moves with the season, the date and how many vehicles are free, so the only reliable number is the quote you get for your own booking. What is fixed is the distance and the drive:

Chamonix, France — 85 km, 1-1.5 hr.

Megeve, France — 75 km, about 1.5 hr.

Morzine / Avoriaz — 100 km, about 1.5 hr.

Verbier — 150 km, about 2 hr.

Crans-Montana — 180 km, about 2.5 hr.

Zermatt — 230 km, 3-3.5 hr (note: the last section requires a train as Zermatt is car-free).

Val d'Isere / Tignes — 220 km, about 3 hr.

Quotes are normally per vehicle for a standard sedan carrying up to 3-4 passengers; minivans and larger vehicles cost more. Peak-season Saturdays are the most expensive day to transfer into the Alps.

Budget alternatives to ski resorts

Shared shuttles to Chamonix are priced per person and several companies compete on the route.

Scheduled buses to Chamonix are slower (1.5-2 hours with stops) but the cheapest option by some margin. Check the operator's own site for the current fare.

Train + bus combinations to Swiss resorts: possible but complex and time-consuming with ski gear.

French border towns

Annecy — 45 km, about 45 minutes. Reachable by private transfer (priced per vehicle) or by scheduled bus, which is much cheaper per person.

Divonne-les-Bains — 20 km, about 20 minutes.

What makes Geneva expensive

Swiss labor costs, fuel prices, motorway tolls, and vehicle maintenance all contribute. For ski resort transfers, winter tire and chain requirements add operational costs. The useful thing to remember is that a private transfer is quoted per vehicle, not per person — so splitting one between four people often brings it close to the per-person cost of a shared shuttle. Do that arithmetic on your actual quote before assuming the shuttle is cheaper.

Tipping

Not expected in Swiss taxis, though rounding up the fare is common. For transfer drivers, a tip is appreciated but not obligatory.
