Transport costs from Cairo Airport vary with the method you choose, the time of day, and how well you negotiate. What follows is how each option is priced — not a fare table, and deliberately so.

Cairo's white taxis are metered, and the meter is the thing to insist on. This guide does not print a target fare because Cairo's tariff is set by the authorities and revised (it has moved with fuel prices more than once), and the figures floating around travel sites disagree with each other by a factor of three. A number you half-remember from a website is worse than no number: it is exactly what a driver arguing for a flat rate wants you to be working from.

The honest way to price your ride

Open Uber or Careem while you are still in the arrivals hall. Whatever you end up taking, the app quote is a live benchmark for what your specific trip is worth at that moment, from a source with no incentive to overcharge you. It is the single most useful thing you can do at Cairo Airport, and it is free.

By destination

• Downtown Cairo / Tahrir Square is about 20 km across the city.
• New Cairo / 5th Settlement is closer to the airport — the cheapest of the common runs.
• Giza / Pyramids is about 35 km, the far side of the city, and the most expensive.
• Alexandria is roughly 220 km and a 2.5-3.5 hour drive. Taxis are not practical for it: most drivers refuse or quote very high. A pre-booked transfer is the practical direct option, or take a taxi to the Turgoman bus station and a GoBus or SuperJet coach from there.

By method

• Metered taxi: cheapest door-to-door if the meter runs. It will not always run.
