Austin-Bergstrom Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is about 13 km southeast of downtown Austin. The drive takes 15-30 minutes in normal traffic, but Austin's traffic is notoriously unpredictable, especially during events like SXSW, ACL Festival, or Formula 1 weekend. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is the most popular option. Taxis, pre-booked transfers, and a city bus also serve the airport.

Austin-Bergstrom is a single-terminal airport. Domestic arrivals walk straight from the gate to baggage claim on the lower level. International arrivals go through US Customs and Border Protection, which can take 30-60 minutes depending on staffing and flight volume. Global Entry and automated kiosks speed this up significantly.

Baggage claim has multiple carousels and is generally efficient. The terminal has strong Austin character with live music stages, local food vendors, and local artwork. After collecting bags, ground transportation exits are clearly signed. Rideshare pickup, taxis, buses, and the parking garage are all accessible from the lower level.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is the default for most Austin travellers. Pickup is at the designated rideshare zone on the lower level, near the south end of the terminal. The app quotes your price before you confirm, and it moves with demand — during SXSW, ACL, F1 weekends or a Friday evening rush it climbs steeply. Wait times range from 2-15 minutes.

Taxis line up at the ground transportation area on the lower level. Austin taxis are metered with a base fare plus a per-mile charge, and there is no flat airport rate. Worth knowing: under Austin's city code each taxi franchise sets its own rate of fare rather than the city fixing one, and three different companies serve the airport — so there is no single published number we can quote you. Check the rate card in the cab before you set off. The upside is that taxi meters don't surge.

Capital Metro Bus (Route 20) runs from the airport to downtown for USD 1.25 (about EUR 1.09), with a daily cap of USD 2.50 — two rides and the rest of the day is free. The ride takes about 35 minutes and buses run every 15-30 minutes. Route 20 (Manor Road/Riverside) runs up Riverside Drive to downtown and the University of Texas campus. It is a legitimate option if you are travelling light.

Pre-booked transfers with meet-and-greet service are quoted when you book and fixed from then on. The driver meets you at baggage claim with a name sign. Minivans and SUVs for groups cost more than sedans. Useful for business travellers and families — and during a big event weekend, a locked price stops being a luxury.

Car rental counters are in the terminal. Austin is a sprawling city and a car is useful if you plan to explore beyond downtown. Traffic can be heavy on I-35 and MoPac during rush hours.

Getting from the airport to common destinations:

Prices assume normal traffic. During major events (SXSW in March, ACL in October, F1 in October), rideshare prices can triple. Taxi meters run regardless of events, making them more predictable during surges.

Austin-Bergstrom handles flights until about midnight. Rideshare services operate 24 hours and are the easiest late-night option, though wait times increase after 11 PM. Taxis are available but fewer in number late at night. Route 20 stops around midnight, but CapMetro's Route 483 Night Owl Riverside also serves the airport from after midnight until 4 a.m. — check the current timetable, as it is far less frequent. Pre-booked transfers are available at any hour. The airport terminal stays open but most food and retail outlets close by 10-11 PM. The South Austin area near the airport has limited late-night activity.

Rideshare vehicles vary in size. If you have car seats, strollers, and multiple bags, request an XL vehicle through the app. Standard Uber/Lyft cars cannot always fit a family's luggage. Taxis at the rank are standard sedans. Pre-booked transfers let you specify vehicle type and request child seats in advance. Texas law requires car seats for children under 8 unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. Rideshare and taxi drivers are not required to provide car seats, so bring your own or book a transfer.

Rideshare pickup is at the designated zone on the lower level, south end of the terminal. Follow the signs marked "Rideshare Pickup" or "TNCs." Your app will guide you to the exact spot. Taxis line up at the ground transportation area, also on the lower level. Pre-booked transfer drivers meet you in the baggage claim area with a name sign. The terminal is well-signed and navigation is straightforward. Do not get picked up from the upper (departure) level, as enforcement is active.

Choose a rideshare if you are going to a specific address, want app-based convenience, and it is not a major event period. Check the price estimate before requesting.

Choose a taxi if you want a metered, predictable fare without surge pricing. Good during events when rideshare prices spike.

Choose the Route 20 bus if you are heading downtown, travelling light, and want to spend USD 1.25 instead of a metered or surging car fare.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you need guaranteed transport, child seats, a specific vehicle size, or are travelling for business and want meet-and-greet service.
