The taxi option
Seattle airport taxis are metered, not flat-rated. The joint City of Seattle / King County rule that governs taxi fares specifically "does not establish any flat rate" between downtown Seattle and SEA, so the widely repeated $40 airport flat fare is not a regulated price. What you get instead is a published, regulated meter (City of Seattle Director's Rule FOR-HIRE TRANSPORTATION-11-2025 / King County Public Rule FHT-10-2025-PR, in force since 6 August 2025): $2.60 to start, $2.70 per mile, and $0.50 per minute whenever traffic drops the car below 11 mph, with a $20 minimum on any trip leaving the airport.

That is transparent and requires zero advance planning — you walk to the third floor of the parking garage, join the queue, and go. Downtown is roughly 14 miles, which puts the meter near $39 before waiting time.
The downsides: you may wait in line during peak arrival times, the time charge builds during an I-5 crawl, and if you are heading somewhere distant (Tacoma, Leavenworth, Anacortes) the metered fare climbs with no price certainty until you arrive.
Ride-hailing (Uber/Lyft)
Pickup is at the same parking garage, third floor. There is no published tariff — fares move with demand, so they can undercut a metered taxi off-peak and beat it comfortably during a surge. The app shows you the estimate before you commit, which is helpful; compare it against the meter rates above.
The downsides: surge pricing during rush hours or bad weather can push fares above taxi rates. Driver availability can be inconsistent, with wait times of 5-15 minutes. During peak times, the pickup area gets congested.
Pre-booked private transfer
A driver meets you at baggage claim or a designated meeting point. The price is quoted per vehicle and fixed in advance, so it does not move with traffic or demand. It varies with vehicle type and destination, so get a live quote for your route — to Bellevue or further afield, the point is that the number is settled before you land.
The advantages: complete certainty on price and pickup. The driver tracks your flight and adjusts for delays. No parking garage navigation, no queue, no surge pricing. For groups, a single vehicle booking is simpler than coordinating multiple taxis or rides.
The downside: it costs more than a taxi for a solo downtown trip, and requires advance booking.
Which makes sense for you
Solo traveller to downtown: A metered taxi needs no booking and runs on a regulated rate — near $39 on a clear run. Ride-hailing may undercut it when demand is low. The Light Rail at $3.00 beats both on price.
Couple going downtown: Similar calculation — taxi or ride-hailing works well, and both are charged per car rather than per head. The Light Rail at $3.00 per person is worth considering if you are travelling light.
Family or group of 3-4: A pre-booked transfer becomes competitive. One vehicle, one fixed price, potentially a child seat if requested. Compare the per-person cost against multiple Light Rail tickets or a single taxi.
Heading to Bellevue, Tacoma, or beyond: This is where the meter gets uncomfortable — $2.70 a mile plus $0.50 for every minute below 11 mph, with no ceiling and no certainty until you arrive. A pre-booked transfer converts that into one agreed number. The further you are going, the more that matters.
Late night arrival: A pre-booked transfer guarantees pickup. Taxis are available but in reduced numbers. Ride-hailing wait times stretch. The certainty alone justifies the modest premium.
