Fort Lauderdale Airport to the City – What You Actually Need to Know

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is only about 5 km from downtown Fort Lauderdale and sits conveniently between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, Florida. The ride to Fort Lauderdale Beach or downtown takes just 10–20 minutes in normal traffic.

Your options include a pre-booked private transfer (quoted per vehicle when you book), a metered taxi (fares are regulated by Broward County, and the airport publishes estimates for the longer runs — USD 18–21 to Port Everglades, USD 72 to Miami International, USD 80 to South Beach), rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft (priced dynamically in the app), the Tri-Rail commuter train, or the Brightline intercity train to Miami or West Palm Beach. FLL also has excellent highway access if you are heading to Miami Beach (~45 min) or the cruise port.

FLL has four terminals. After clearing customs (for international arrivals in Terminal 4) or simply collecting your bags (domestic), you follow signs to ground transportation on the lower level of each terminal.

The airport is modern, well-signed, and manageable. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The arrivals level has rental car shuttle stops, taxi queues, and designated rideshare pickup zones.

One thing to know: FLL can get very busy during snowbird season (November–April) and spring break (March). Ground transportation queues during peak hours can be significant.

What the airport actually publishes. Broward County states that taxi fares are regulated by law, and the airport publishes these estimates for the longer runs — noting they are estimates that may vary and are subject to the current fuel surcharge:

Those are the only fares the airport puts a number on. For short hops to Fort Lauderdale Beach, downtown or Hollywood it does not publish an estimate, and the meter decides — these are 10–15 minute rides, so the figure is modest, but we are not going to invent one for you. Uber and Lyft quote you upfront in the app before you commit, which is the easiest way to sanity-check any of these.

FLL taxi fares use a meter, and the rates are regulated by Broward County ordinance. The rate card is posted in the cab — read it before you set off, and ask the driver for an estimate to your address. The airport's own published figures (USD 18–21 to Port Everglades, USD 72 to Miami International, USD 80 to South Beach, USD 86 to the Port of Miami, USD 135 to West Palm Beach) are explicitly estimates and are subject to a fuel surcharge, so treat them as a sanity check rather than a quote.

Uber and Lyft price dynamically. Whether they beat a taxi on any given trip depends entirely on demand — surge pricing during peak hours (Friday evenings, holiday weekends, cruise ship days) can push them well above a metered fare, and at quiet times they can sit well below it. The app shows you the price before you commit, which is the point.

Pre-booked transfers are quoted per vehicle at booking. They provide price certainty and a driver waiting with your name — no searching for your pickup spot in a busy airport.

Tip: A 15–20% tip is standard in the US for taxis and appreciated for transfer drivers. Uber/Lyft tips are added in-app. Whatever fare you are quoted, budget for this on top.

FLL operates well past midnight with domestic red-eye flights and international arrivals. Taxis are available 24/7 at the stands. Uber and Lyft coverage is excellent at all hours in South Florida.

The Tri-Rail does not run late at night, and Brightline has limited late-evening service. For arrivals after 23:00, your realistic options are taxi, rideshare, or a pre-booked transfer.

The good news: late-night traffic in South Florida is light, so the drive into Fort Lauderdale or even Miami is fast and smooth.

FLL handles massive cruise traffic, so the infrastructure is built for people with lots of luggage. Trolleys are available throughout.

For families, the main consideration is vehicle size. Standard Uber/Lyft vehicles and taxis fit 2–3 suitcases in the trunk. If you have a family of four with full luggage, request an Uber XL or book a minivan transfer.

Child car seats: Florida law requires children under 5 to be in a car seat. Taxis are exempt from this requirement, but Uber/Lyft are not. You can bring your own seat, or pre-book a transfer with one included.

Taxis: Follow signs to Ground Transportation on the lower (arrivals) level. The taxi stand is clearly marked outside each terminal.

Uber/Lyft: FLL has designated rideshare pickup zones on the lower level. Open your app, request a ride, and follow the in-app directions to the numbered pickup spot for your terminal.

Pre-booked transfers: Drivers typically meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, or at a pre-arranged spot on the lower level. You will receive instructions before your flight.

Tri-Rail/Brightline: A free shuttle connects the airport terminals to the nearby FLL train station. Follow signs for the shuttle bus on the lower level.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you want certainty and comfort, you are heading to Miami Beach (long ride, fixed price beats surge), or you are traveling with family and need car seats.

Choose Uber/Lyft if: you are going to Fort Lauderdale Beach or downtown (short, cheap ride), you are comfortable with the app, and it is not a peak surge time.

Choose a taxi if: you want to go immediately without waiting for an app match, or you prefer not to use rideshare apps.

Choose Brightline if: you are heading to downtown Miami or West Palm Beach and want a comfortable, fast train experience.

Choose Tri-Rail if: you are budget-conscious and heading somewhere along the coastal rail corridor.
