Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 11 km (7 miles) west of Uptown Charlotte. Transport costs are reasonable, with a good range of options from budget bus to premium transfer. Two of them publish a price you can check before you fly — the bus and the taxi. The rest do not.

None of them publishes a tariff, so any number printed here would be a guess — and a guess that looks freshly checked is worse than no number at all. Get the quote in the app or at booking and measure it against the $34.50 taxi fare.
CATS Sprinter — the budget champion
The Route 5 Sprinter bus from CLT to the Charlotte Transportation Center costs $2.20 — one of the best airport bus deals in the US. The bus runs every 20 minutes during peak hours, every 30 minutes off-peak. From the Transportation Center, the LYNX Blue Line light rail connects to South End, NoDa, and UNC Charlotte. Confirm the current fare with CATS before you travel.
Taxi pricing — flat to Uptown, metered beyond
Charlotte Douglas publishes its taxi rates directly: a $32 flat rate to Uptown (within the I-277 loop), a $16 flat rate for any trip within a 3-mile radius of CLT, and a $2.50 airport fee on all trips. Beyond those zones the meter runs — $3.50 initial, $0.70 per 1/5 mile (which is $3.50 a mile), and $0.70 per minute when stopped or in traffic.
So Uptown is $34.50 all in, before tip. Add the customary 15-20% and budget about $40.
The flat rate is the taxi's real advantage on this route: it does not surge, and it does not move when the traffic does. The airport revises these rates from time to time, so its taxi page is the place to check the current ones.
Rideshare
Uber and Lyft pick up in the marked zone on the lower level. Neither publishes a rate, and both surge during:
- Panthers game days (Bank of America Stadium)
- Hornets/concerts (Spectrum Center)
- Rush hour (07:00-09:00, 16:30-18:30)
- Severe weather (thunderstorms, ice storms)
Because the taxi to Uptown is fixed, it makes a useful yardstick: when the app quotes more than $34.50, the taxi rank is the better deal.
Transfer value
A private transfer fixes the price when you book rather than on the road, and the driver meets you inside. The value increases for:
- Groups of 4+, where splitting the cost brings the per-person price down sharply
- Families needing car seats (the only option)
- Suburb destinations like Ballantyne or Lake Norman, where no flat rate exists and the meter would otherwise decide your cost
