Getting from Juanda Airport to Surabaya: What You Actually Need to Know

Juanda International Airport (SUB) sits about 20 km south of Surabaya city center. A private transfer takes around 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. Airport taxis run on a fixed-rate counter system priced by destination zone, and ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek) show you the fare before you confirm — check the current price for your exact route before you land. Pre-booking a transfer is the simplest option, especially if you land tired or outside business hours.

After clearing immigration (for international arrivals) or simply walking out of the gate (domestic), you will follow signs to the arrivals hall. Baggage claim is straightforward but can be slow during peak hours. Once you exit through the doors, you will find yourself in a busy arrivals area with taxi counters, ride-hailing pickup zones, and people holding name signs. The airport has two terminals — Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international and some domestic carriers. Both terminals have similar ground transport options, though Terminal 2 is newer and slightly better organized.

Airport taxi (fixed-rate): Official airport taxis (Primkopal Juanda) operate from a counter just outside arrivals. You pay a fixed rate based on your destination zone, quoted at the counter before you get in — ask to see the current zone price list. This is reliable but generally costs more than booking a ride online.

Ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek): Both work well at Juanda. You will need a local SIM card or working data connection. Pickup points are designated areas in the parking lot — follow the signs. The app shows you the exact fare before you confirm, so there are no surprises, though surge pricing applies during peak hours and rain.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign. No negotiating, no searching for the pickup zone, no need for a local SIM. The vehicle and price are confirmed before you land.

Hotel shuttle: Some hotels in Surabaya offer airport pickup, usually for a fee. Ask your hotel when booking.

Note: Juanda does not currently have an operating airport train. A rail link has been planned but was not in service as of 2026 — the nearest stations (Sawotratap, Waru) are several kilometres from the terminal and are not a practical airport connection.

We are not publishing fixed fare figures here because Juanda's airport taxi counter uses a zone-based price list that is set by the operator (not published online) and Grab/Gojek fares move with live demand — both can change without notice. What you can rely on: the airport taxi counter quotes a fixed price for your destination zone before you get in, and ride-hailing apps show the exact fare in the app before you confirm the ride. Compare the two once you land and pick whichever is showing the better price. A pre-booked transfer locks in a price before you fly, which is the only option with a fare you can confirm in advance from outside Indonesia.

Prices increase for destinations further out like Malang (2-3 hours south) or Trowulan. Tolls are usually included in pre-booked transfers but added on top for taxis.

Juanda handles flights throughout the evening, with some arrivals past midnight. Ride-hailing apps still work late at night, though wait times increase and there may be a small surge. Airport taxis are available around the clock. If you land after 23:00, a pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option — your driver will track your flight and wait regardless of delays.

If you are traveling with children and multiple bags, the main concern is vehicle size. Standard taxis and sedans handle two large suitcases comfortably but not much more. For families of four or more with full luggage, a minivan transfer is worth the extra cost. Car seats for small children are not standard in Indonesian taxis — if you need one, request it when pre-booking a transfer. The walk from arrivals to the ride-hailing pickup area can be 5-10 minutes in the heat, which matters when you have tired kids.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers typically wait just outside the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name. At Terminal 2, there is a designated meeting area near the exit doors. For Terminal 1, drivers wait in the arrivals lobby area. Your transfer confirmation will include specific meeting instructions and a phone number. For ride-hailing pickups, follow the signs to the designated Grab/Gojek pickup zone in the parking area — do not try to get picked up at the curb, as airport security will redirect you.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you want zero hassle, you are arriving late at night, you have a lot of luggage, or you are traveling with young children.

Choose a ride-hailing app if: you have a working local SIM, you are comfortable with the pickup process, and you want to compare live prices before you commit.

Choose an airport taxi if: you want a simple option without an app, you do not mind paying the counter's fixed zone rate, and you prefer to just walk up to a counter.
