Istanbul Airport is 40 km from the city center. The cost varies dramatically by transport choice and, for taxis, by traffic conditions. Here is a complete breakdown.

The taxi tariff: Istanbul taxis are metered on the city tariff — 65.40 TRY to start plus 43.56 TRY per km, with a 210 TRY short-distance minimum (Istanbul municipality / UKOME, February 2026). The taxi figures above are derived from that tariff over the distances shown, with an allowance for waiting time in traffic: the low end is roughly the bare meter, the high end assumes a slow run. The tariff is revised regularly — check the current one before you travel. Where no distance is shown we have not estimated a fare. Havaist and metro fares change frequently: check hava.ist and metro.istanbul for current prices.
The traffic variable
This is the single biggest factor in transport costs at IST. The 40 km drive to Sultanahmet can take:
- 30-40 minutes at night or early morning (lower fare)
- 50-70 minutes mid-day (moderate fare)
- 70-100+ minutes during rush hour (higher fare)
The meter runs on both time and distance. Sitting in traffic costs money — the same trip can cost substantially more at 18:00 than at midnight.
Why the metro is the cheapest
The M11 metro line connects IST to the city. You pay with an İstanbulkart; Metro İstanbul sets and revises the airport-line fare, so check metro.istanbul for the current price before you travel. From Gayrettepe station, you can connect to the M2 line for Taksim or transfer further for Sultanahmet. Total journey time is roughly 60-80 minutes including connections.
The trade-off is clear: the metro costs a fraction of a taxi but takes longer and requires transfers with luggage. For solo travelers with a backpack, it is excellent value. For families or anyone with heavy bags, it is impractical.
Havaist: the middle ground
Havaist fares vary by route and change frequently—check hava.ist or the Havaist app for current prices. The Taksim route is the most popular. Buses are comfortable and have luggage storage. Journey time is similar to a taxi in traffic (50-70 minutes).
The downside is the last-mile problem. From the Havaist stop to your actual hotel, you may need another short metered taxi ride or a walk.
Currency context
The Turkish Lira moves, and the taxi tariff itself is revised regularly, so any foreign-currency figure here dates quickly. Check a live rate for your own currency rather than relying on a converted number in a guide. The lira amounts above come from the published tariff and from the operators; those are the numbers to plan around.
What pushes the price up
Rush hour traffic. The biggest cost driver. Avoid 07:00-10:00 and 16:00-20:00 if possible.
Asian side destinations. Kadikoy and Uskudar require crossing the Bosphorus, adding distance and bridge/tunnel tolls.
Sabiha Gokcen transfer. The cross-city trip between Istanbul's two airports is long (90 km) and expensive. If you have a connection at SAW, factor this in.
Tipping
Tipping taxi drivers in Turkey is not mandatory. Rounding the fare up to a convenient note is customary. For transfer drivers, a small tip is appreciated but not expected.
The bottom line on cost
Istanbul offers a genuine range, from a single metro fare to a few thousand lira for a rush-hour taxi across the city. The Havaist bus hits a sweet spot of affordable and comfortable for most tourists. Taxis and transfers make sense for convenience, families, or late-night arrivals. The key cost-saving move is avoiding rush hour: because the meter charges for waiting time, a clear road is a cheaper road.
