YYC - Calgary

Family and kids guide for Calgary Airport transfers

Families arriving in Calgary are usually heading either downtown or to the Rocky Mountains. Both journeys are manageable with children, but the details differ.

At the airport

YYC has a modern international terminal with family restrooms, nursing rooms, and a children's play area. Restaurants and shops are available for snacks and essentials. The terminal is spacious and well-organized. Luggage carts are available near the baggage carousels.

Child seats

Alberta law requires children under 6 years and under 18 kg to use a car seat. Children ages 6-9 must use a booster seat. Taxis in Alberta are legally exempt from this requirement, so children can ride in a taxi without one. However, for highway travel — especially the long drive to Banff — a car seat is strongly recommended.

Private transfer companies can provide child seats and boosters if you request them at booking. The Banff Airporter shuttles do not provide child seats. If you are renting a car, most agencies offer car seat rentals for an additional daily fee.

Downtown Calgary with kids

The 20-30 minute ride to downtown is straightforward. A taxi or Uber works well for families with older children. For families with young kids needing car seats, a pre-booked transfer with seats arranged is the safest option. The Route 300 bus is manageable with children but not ideal with heavy luggage and pushchairs.

Banff with kids

The 90-120 minute drive to Banff is where family planning matters most. Young children in car seats for two hours need entertainment and snacks. The scenery through the mountains is beautiful and can keep older kids interested.

For families, a private transfer to Banff is often the best option — you get child seats, your own vehicle, enough luggage space for ski gear or holiday bags, and a driver who handles the mountain conditions. The shared shuttle is cheaper but does not provide child seats, stops at multiple hotels (extending the journey), and has limited luggage space when full.

Winter considerations

Calgary winters mean temperatures well below freezing. Dress children warmly before leaving the terminal — the walk to the car or bus in -20C is harsh in light clothing. Have coats, hats, and gloves accessible, not buried in checked luggage.

For the drive to Banff in winter, ensure your transfer or rental car is equipped for mountain conditions. Carry water and snacks in case of highway delays due to weather.

Luggage for ski families

Families heading to Banff with ski equipment need significant vehicle space. Ski bags, boot bags, regular suitcases, and kids' gear do not fit in a standard sedan. Request an SUV or minivan. The shuttle bus has cargo space but it is shared with all passengers.
