The Late Night Reality
Taoyuan Airport is a major Asian hub, and flights arrive throughout the night. Red-eye flights from Southeast Asia, delayed connections, and late departures from other time zones mean plenty of passengers walking out of TPE between 10 PM and 4 AM. The terminal stays operational, but your transport options narrow.
The MRT Cutoff
The Taoyuan Airport MRT Express stops running at approximately 11 PM. The last train departs the airport around 10:45 PM. If your flight lands after 10 PM and you still need to clear immigration and collect bags, you will likely miss it. Do not plan on the MRT for late arrivals unless your flight lands by 9:30 PM with a realistic buffer.
Late Night Buses
Several airport bus routes continue operating into the early morning hours. Kuo-Kuang 1819 to Taipei Main Station runs until approximately 1-2 AM, with reduced frequency (every 20-30 minutes). Some other routes have overnight service. Fares remain the same (TWD 125-145). The bus is a viable late-night option if the schedule aligns with your arrival time and you do not mind a longer ride.
Taxis After Dark
Taxis are available 24 hours at TPE. The queue may be shorter late at night, but vehicles are generally available. A 20% surcharge applies between 11 PM and 6 AM, bringing the typical fare to central Taipei up to TWD 1,200-1,560 ($36-$48 USD). The surcharge is automatic on the meter.
Drivers available at 2 AM may have more limited English than daytime drivers. Having your hotel address in Chinese on your phone is particularly important for late-night taxi rides.
Pre-Booked Transfers at Night
For arrivals between midnight and 5 AM, a pre-booked transfer is the most comfortable option. Your driver monitors your flight status and adjusts arrival time if your flight is delayed. You walk out to a person holding your name, get in a confirmed vehicle, and go directly to your hotel. Night supplements of $5-$10 USD apply, bringing the total to approximately $45-$70 USD to central Taipei.
The key advantage is certainty. At 2 AM in an unfamiliar airport, knowing exactly where your ride is and that someone is specifically waiting for you has real value.
What About Sleeping at the Airport?
Some travelers with very late or very early connections choose to rest at the airport. TPE has limited sleeping options. There are no capsule hotels inside the terminal as of 2026, though reclining seats are available in some areas. The Novotel Taipei Taoyuan International Airport is connected to Terminal 2 by a covered walkway and offers day-use rooms. If your connecting flight is within 6-8 hours, this may be more practical than traveling to Taipei and back.
The Practical Advice
If you arrive before 10:30 PM, take the MRT. If you arrive between 10:30 PM and 1 AM, check bus schedules or take a taxi. If you arrive after 1 AM, a pre-booked transfer or taxi are your options. For any arrival after midnight, pre-booking removes all the guesswork and is worth the modest premium.
