Late Night Arrivals at Sheremetyevo: Getting to Moscow After Dark

Sheremetyevo is a 24-hour international hub. Flights arrive and depart throughout the night, and the airport never fully sleeps. Late-night transport to Moscow is available, though your options narrow after the last Aeroexpress train.

Aeroexpress Cutoff

The last Aeroexpress train departs Sheremetyevo around 00:30. The first morning train starts at approximately 05:30. If you land between those hours and need the Aeroexpress, you are out of luck. For flights arriving between 23:00 and 00:00, you may still catch the last train if immigration and baggage are quick — but it is risky to count on.

Yandex Go at Night

Yandex Go operates 24/7 and is actually at its best during late-night hours. Moscow traffic virtually disappears between 23:00 and 06:00. A ride to central Moscow that takes 90 minutes at 18:00 takes 40 minutes at 01:00. Prices drop correspondingly because the app calculates fares partly on journey time. Expect RUB 1,800-2,500 (USD 18-25) to central Moscow late at night. Drivers are available — Sheremetyevo is a major pickup point and drivers know flights come in at all hours.

The caveat remains: you need the app working with a valid payment method. At 02:00 in a foreign country is not the ideal time to troubleshoot payment issues.

Airport Taxi Counters

Official taxi desks operate throughout the night. Prices remain at their fixed daytime rates — RUB 3,000-5,000 to central Moscow. You pay more than Yandex Go, but you get immediate service with no app required. For a middle-of-the-night arrival, the simplicity of walking to a counter and paying has real value.

Pre-Booked Transfers

Pre-booked transfer drivers track your flight and adjust for any delays. Whether you land at 14:00 or 03:00, the driver is there. The price is the same regardless of arrival time — no late-night surcharge. For travelers arriving on red-eye flights from Asia, the Middle East, or long-haul connections, this is the lowest-friction option. You walk out, see your name, and you are in the car within minutes.

Night Bus H1

Bus H1 runs between Sheremetyevo and several Moscow Metro stations (including Khovrino) approximately every 30 minutes between 01:00 and 06:00. The fare is around RUB 60. This fills the gap when the Aeroexpress is not running. However, it is slow (45-60 minutes to Khovrino), the Metro does not run between approximately 01:00 and 05:30, and managing luggage on a public bus at 03:00 is not pleasant. This is a budget-only option for solo travelers with backpacks.

Safety at Night

Sheremetyevo is well-lit and has security throughout the night. The terminals remain open for transit passengers. The main safety concern is transport: avoid unofficial drivers who approach you in the terminal. They target late-night arrivals specifically because travelers are tired and options seem limited. Stick to Yandex Go, the official taxi counter, or your pre-booked driver.

The drive to Moscow at night is safe. The M11 highway is well-maintained and well-lit. With no traffic, it is actually the most pleasant time to make the journey.

Practical Tips

If your flight lands between 00:30 and 05:30: book a transfer or plan to use Yandex Go (test the app before you travel). If your flight lands before 00:00: you may still catch the last Aeroexpress, but have a backup plan. If you are willing to wait: the airport has lounges and seating areas where you can rest until the Aeroexpress resumes at 05:30. Some travelers on very late arrivals choose this over a middle-of-the-night taxi ride, especially if their hotel check-in is not until morning.
