STN - London

Late Night Arrivals at London Stansted Airport

Stansted is a budget airline hub, and budget airlines love late-night slots. Flights from European cities regularly land between 10 PM and 1 AM. If yours is one of them, here is what to expect.

The Stansted Express after dark

The last Stansted Express train to Liverpool Street departs around 12:30 AM. If your flight lands at 11 PM, you need to clear immigration, collect bags, and reach the platform within roughly 90 minutes. That is usually possible, but delays at immigration or baggage claim can cut it close. Missing the last train means finding an alternative at 1 AM, which limits your options significantly.

The first morning train departs around 5:30 AM. If you miss the last night service, you face a 5-hour wait at the airport.

Overnight coaches

National Express runs coaches through the night from Stansted to London Victoria and other stops. Departures are roughly hourly between midnight and 5 AM. Journey time is 90-120 minutes, sometimes longer with light traffic paradoxically meaning the bus takes a slightly different route.

Overnight coaches are the budget option at £10-£15. They are perfectly functional but not comfortable for sleeping. If you are okay with arriving at Victoria at 3 AM, this works.

Pre-booked private transfer

This is the most straightforward late-night option. Your driver tracks your flight, adjusts for delays, and meets you at arrivals regardless of the hour. The price is the same as daytime, no surcharge for late arrivals with most services. You get in the car and go directly to your accommodation.

For the Stansted-to-London distance, spending 60-90 minutes in a comfortable car at midnight is significantly better than waiting for a bus or navigating to the train platform with minutes to spare.

Rideshare and taxis

Uber is available but wait times increase after midnight. You might wait 15-25 minutes for a car, and surge pricing is common when late flights create a wave of passengers all requesting rides simultaneously. Regular taxis are available from the rank but supply thins out in the early hours.

The airport at night

Stansted stays open 24 hours, but it is not designed for comfortable overnight stays. Most shops and restaurants close by 11 PM. There are seating areas but no dedicated sleeping facilities. If you planned to wait for the first morning train, expect hard seats and bright lights.

Practical advice

If your flight is scheduled to land after 10 PM, book a transfer in advance. The cost of a private car to London is £90-£140, and at midnight that buys you certainty and comfort. The alternative is piecing together a solution from whatever happens to be available when you walk out, which at 1 AM can mean a long wait.

Also check whether your accommodation handles late check-ins. Some London hotels and Airbnbs have specific procedures for arrivals after midnight. Sort that out before you fly.
