Arriving at Engadin Airport with Family and Kids

If you are flying privately into the Engadin with children, the airport experience is about as stress-free as air travel gets. But there are a few things worth planning for.

The arrival experience

Engadin Airport is a small facility. There are no long walks through terminals, no crowds, and no complex navigation. You step off your aircraft, handle any formalities in the compact terminal, and your transport is typically right there. For families with young children, this simplicity is a genuine advantage — no stroller marathons through endless corridors.

Ground handling staff assist with luggage, so you are not wrestling bags while managing children.

Altitude awareness

The airport is at 1,707 meters and St. Moritz sits at about 1,822 meters. If you are arriving from sea level, young children (and adults) may feel the altitude — mild headache, fatigue, or restlessness. This is not a medical emergency, but it is worth knowing. Keep children hydrated and expect them to be a bit more tired than usual on the first day. If your child has any respiratory conditions, discuss the altitude with your doctor before the trip.

Car seats in Switzerland

Swiss law requires children under 12 years old who are shorter than 150 cm to use an appropriate child restraint system (car seat or booster). This applies to taxis and private transfers. When booking your ground transport, specify the ages and sizes of your children so the provider can equip the vehicle correctly.

Luxury transfer services in the Engadin are accustomed to this request and can typically provide high-quality child seats. Hotel vehicles may also have seats available — confirm with the concierge.

Luggage and equipment

Families visiting the Engadin — especially during ski season — often travel with considerable gear: ski equipment, boots, helmets, plus regular luggage and children's items. An SUV or larger vehicle is the practical choice. Standard sedan transfers may not have enough boot space for a family's full winter kit.

When arranging transport, list everything you are bringing. A good transfer provider will ensure the right vehicle shows up.

Getting to the hotel quickly

St. Moritz is only 10 minutes from the airport. Even restless children will manage this ride without issue. The road follows the valley and is well-maintained year-round. In winter, it is cleared and salted regularly. The short distance means that even with the altitude and travel fatigue, your family will be settled at the hotel quickly.

Recommended approach

Arrange a private transfer or hotel pickup with a family-sized vehicle and child seats. Confirm everything in advance. The Engadin is a place where things work smoothly when planned — and this applies to your airport transfer as much as anything else.
