San Jose Airport is not a major red-eye hub, but delayed flights and late connections do land here after hours. If you arrive after 10 PM, here is what to expect.
VTA Light Rail stops early
The last VTA Light Rail train from SJC departs around 11:30 PM on weekdays and midnight on weekends. If your flight lands after 10:30 PM, the math gets tight — deplaning, luggage, and walking to the station can take 20-30 minutes. Do not plan on catching the last train unless your flight arrived well before 10 PM.
The first morning train starts around 5:30 AM. Between midnight and 5:30 AM, public transit is not available from SJC.
Taxis after hours
Taxis are available 24 hours at SJC, but the supply thins considerably after 11 PM. You may wait 10-20 minutes for a car, especially if multiple late flights arrive around the same time. Fares are the same as daytime — metered, with no late-night surcharge (unlike Singapore or other cities). A ride to downtown San Jose is still $15-25.
The advantage of late night travel: Highway 101 and 87 are empty, so the drive is fast. A trip to Cupertino that takes 35 minutes at 5 PM takes 15 minutes at midnight.
Rideshare after midnight
Uber and Lyft are available around the clock in the Silicon Valley area. The tech workforce means there are typically drivers on the road even at 2 AM, though response times are slower (5-15 minutes versus 2-5 minutes during the day). Fares are often lower at night due to reduced demand, unless a major event has just ended.
Expect $12-20 to downtown San Jose and $25-45 to farther Silicon Valley destinations after midnight.
Pre-booked transfers — certainty at any hour
A pre-booked transfer operates the same at 2 AM as at 2 PM. Your driver monitors your flight, adjusts for delays, and is at the terminal when you walk out. The flat rate does not change based on time of day: $40-65 to downtown, $55-85 to Silicon Valley destinations.
The value of a pre-booked transfer at night is less about price (taxis and rideshare are often comparable or cheaper at SJC after hours) and more about certainty. After a delayed flight landing at 1 AM, knowing exactly how you are getting to your hotel removes the last piece of travel stress.
What SJC is like after hours
SJC is a quiet airport at night. Most shops and restaurants close by 9-10 PM. The terminal is safe and well-lit but not bustling. If you have a long wait for transport, there is limited seating in the baggage claim area. Cell phone charging outlets are available.
The curb outside arrivals is quiet after midnight. Unlike SFO, there is no steady stream of taxis. If you did not arrange transport in advance, your phone and a rideshare app are your best tools.
The practical recommendation
If you know your flight arrives after 10 PM at SJC, arrange transport before you land. A pre-booked transfer or a rideshare request queued on your phone ensures you are not standing at a quiet curb at midnight trying to figure out the next step. SJC is safe and manageable, but having a plan makes the difference between a 5-minute exit and a 25-minute wait.
