The airport experience with children
King Khalid Airport terminals are modern and well-maintained. The facilities include family prayer rooms, bathrooms with changing areas, and some play spaces depending on the terminal. Immigration is orderly, though it can be slow when multiple flights arrive simultaneously.
The terminal is fully air-conditioned, which matters because the moment you step outside, the temperature changes dramatically. In summer months, the difference between the terminal interior and the outside air can be 20C or more.
Heat and children
This is not a minor consideration. Riyadh summers are among the hottest of any major city. From May through September, daytime temperatures routinely exceed 45C (113F), and even at night the air stays above 30C.
For families with young children, minimize time spent outside the terminal. Have your transport arranged so you walk directly to a vehicle rather than waiting in an outdoor queue. Have water bottles ready. The walk from the terminal exit to a pickup vehicle is short, but standing outside for even 5-10 minutes in peak summer with a baby or toddler is inadvisable.
Winter months (November through February) are pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 15-25C and cool evenings. The heat concern is seasonal but serious when applicable.
Car seats
Saudi Arabia has child seat requirements for private vehicles, but enforcement is inconsistent, and ride-hail vehicles (Uber, Careem) do not provide them as standard.
- Bring your own travel car seat. The safest and most reliable option, especially for children under 4.
- Request through a pre-booked transfer. Specify the child's age and weight when booking. Good services can provide appropriate seats - confirm at least 48 hours in advance.
- Ride without one. Common practice locally, but a personal risk decision for each family.
Vehicle size
Standard ride-hail sedans in Riyadh cannot comfortably fit two adults, two children, a stroller, and multiple suitcases. For families, request the XL category on Uber/Careem, or book a minivan or SUV transfer in advance.
Specifying your exact luggage count and number of passengers when booking a transfer ensures the vehicle actually matches your needs. This avoids the frustrating scenario of watching a sedan pull up that clearly cannot accommodate your family.
The 35 km drive
The airport is not close to central Riyadh. The drive is 25-45 minutes on a multi-lane highway. For families with young children, this is actually manageable - kids often fall asleep in the car. But it does mean you want the right vehicle with appropriate seating, not a cramped taxi where everyone is uncomfortable for half an hour.
Riyadh with kids in general
Riyadh has become significantly more family-friendly in recent years, with new entertainment venues, parks, and attractions. The city is very car-dependent, so having transport figured out from the airport sets the tone for your visit.
Practical recommendations
For families arriving in summer: book a transfer with appropriate vehicle size and car seats. Do not improvise. The heat alone makes waiting outside for a ride-hail unacceptable with young children.
For families arriving in cooler months: Uber XL or a pre-booked transfer both work well. The choice depends on whether you want the fixed price and certainty of a transfer or the flexibility of an app.
