Arriving late at night at Rhodes Airport

Last updated: March 2026

Rhodes is a major charter destination. Airlines from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and across Europe schedule flights to land in the early hours to make the most of daytime capacity at their home airports. Late-night arrivals are routine here, not the exception.

What to expect after landing at night

The airport building stays open while flights are operating, but it empties fast. Most shops and the café close by 22:00. The arrivals process is often quicker at night — fewer overlapping flights means shorter queues at passport control and faster baggage delivery. Expect to be outside the terminal within 20-25 minutes of landing.

The arrivals hall is functional at any hour. ATMs work around the clock. The information desk is not staffed at night. Car rental counters typically close by 23:00, sometimes earlier — if you planned to pick up a rental car, you may need to confirm late pickup arrangements in advance or wait until morning.

Taxis after midnight

The taxi rank outside arrivals operates as long as flights are landing. However, the number of available taxis after 23:00 drops noticeably. When two or three charter flights land within a short window — which happens frequently in summer — the queue of passengers can outstrip available cars.

Night-tariff fares (after midnight) add a 20-40% surcharge over daytime rates. A journey to Lindos that costs 60-80 EUR in the afternoon can reach 85-110 EUR at 01:00. For guests heading to the far south coast (Kiotari, Gennadi), this is a genuinely expensive taxi ride under uncertainty about vehicle availability.

There is no ride-hailing or Uber on Rhodes.

Public transport

KTEL buses stop running from the airport in the evening, typically by 22:00. There is no night bus service. If your flight lands after 22:00, the bus is not an option.

Why south coast guests particularly need a plan

A late-night arrival at Rhodes Airport for a guest staying in Rhodes Town is manageable — it is a 14 km taxi ride, taxis generally cover it, and the fare is modest even with the night surcharge.

For guests heading 50+ km south to Lindos, Pefkos, or Kiotari, the situation is different. A late-night charter landing at 01:00 competing with other passengers for a small number of available taxis, facing a 60-90 minute metered drive with night surcharges, to a destination the driver might find inconveniently far — this is the scenario that benefits most from a pre-booked transfer.

With a pre-booked transfer, the driver is assigned to your flight. They track the arrival time and delays. They wait in the arrivals hall with your name. The price is the price you paid at booking, regardless of what time the plane actually landed.

Practical tips for late arrivals

  • Download offline maps of Rhodes before you fly. Mobile data activates after a moment, and having a map immediately is useful.
  • Save your accommodation address and phone number somewhere you can access without data.
  • Carry euros in cash. The ATMs at the airport function overnight, but it is easier to have cash ready.
  • If you are collecting a rental car the next day, confirm with the rental company what the opening hours are and whether you need to arrange anything on arrival night.
  • The airport area itself has no hotels. The nearest accommodation is in Rhodes Town, about 14 km away.

The bottom line for night arrivals

For guests heading to Rhodes Town or the near north, a taxi at night is workable — just be prepared to wait if it is busy. For guests heading anywhere south of Kolymbia, particularly Lindos and beyond, pre-booking a transfer before you travel is the sensible call. The money saved by waiting for a metered taxi is not meaningful compared to the certainty of a driver already waiting with your name.
