Lefkada is a popular family destination with calm beach waters in the east and dramatic scenery across the island. The journey from Preveza Airport is the first part of the trip — and with children, it pays to organise it in advance.
At the airport
Preveza Aktion Airport is small and compact. The walk from aircraft to baggage claim is short. Restrooms with basic facilities are available in the arrivals area. Baggage typically arrives within 15-25 minutes of landing. Trolleys are available.
The terminal does not have extensive child facilities, but the compact size works in your favour — you are not navigating a large complex with tired children.
Car seats
Greek taxis do not carry child car seats. If your child requires one — legally required in Greece for children under 135 cm or 36 kg — your options are:
1. Bring a lightweight travel car seat from home. 2. Book a private transfer and request the appropriate seat at the time of booking, specifying the child's age and weight.
Confirm the car seat arrangement the day before travel. This is a practical necessity, not a luxury.
Vehicle size for Lefkada journeys
A standard sedan taxi holds 3-4 passengers with 2-3 bags. For a family of four with a stroller, car seat, and full holiday luggage going to Nidri (50 km) or Vassiliki (65 km), a sedan will be cramped.
A pre-booked minivan gives you the right vehicle from the start. Specify your group size and luggage needs at booking. This is particularly important for longer Lefkada journeys — arriving at the airport rank and hoping a minivan is available is unreliable at a small regional airport.
The journey to your accommodation
The drive from PVK to Lefkada Town is 25-30 minutes. To Nidri is 45-55 minutes. To Vassiliki is 60-75 minutes. These are manageable distances for children.
The road to the west coast involves mountain sections that are winding. Children prone to motion sickness should be seated where they can see forward and may benefit from medication on the mountain section.
Pack water and snacks for the journey — there are limited stops between the airport and resort areas.

Arriving at the airport rank with children, luggage, and a stroller, only to face a 40-minute wait for a taxi or no available minivan, is a stressful start to a holiday.
