Getting from Tocumen Airport with kids and family

Last updated: February 2026

What the airport is like with children

Tocumen is a modern terminal with reasonably smooth floors and decent signage. The walk from the gate to baggage claim is not excessively long, but it is long enough to matter if you are carrying a toddler and managing hand luggage. Trolleys are available in the baggage hall.

Immigration queues can be slow when multiple flights arrive at once. There is no family fast-track lane. If you have small children, be prepared for a wait of 20-60 minutes standing in line. Bringing snacks and a distraction for this stretch is practical advice.

The arrivals hall has bathrooms, though dedicated baby changing facilities are limited. There is a small nursing room available.

The car seat situation

Panama does not strictly enforce child car seat laws for taxis, and most taxi drivers at the airport will not have one. This puts the responsibility on you. You have a few options:

  • Bring your own travel car seat. This is the safest choice. Lightweight travel seats exist specifically for this purpose.
  • Request a car seat through a pre-booked transfer. Most transfer services can provide one if you specify the child's age and weight at booking time. Confirm this at least 24 hours before arrival.
  • Take the risk in a taxi without one. Some parents do this. It is your call, but short-distance taxi rides are where most road accidents happen.
Do not assume any car seat will be available at the last minute. If you need one, arrange it in advance.

Luggage logistics

Families travel heavy. Between strollers, car seats, suitcases, and carry-ons, you can easily have six or more pieces. A standard sedan will not fit all of this plus a family of four.

If you have significant luggage, book a minivan or larger vehicle rather than hoping everything will squeeze into a regular taxi. This is one area where pre-booking pays off clearly - you can specify your luggage count and ensure the vehicle is appropriate.

The walk to the car

From the arrivals exit to the taxi queue or pickup area involves walking outside. Panama is hot and humid at all hours. With tired children and heavy bags, this short walk can feel longer than it is. Having a driver meet you inside at the arrivals hall with a name sign eliminates the outdoor trudge with kids.

Hotels and destinations

Most family-friendly hotels are in the Casco Viejo area, along the coastal strip, or near the Amador Causeway. These are all 30-50 minutes from the airport. If your children tend to fall asleep in cars, this works in your favor. If they get restless, pack something to occupy them.

Practical recommendations

For families with children under 5, a pre-booked transfer with a car seat is the least stressful option. The price is higher than an Uber, but the convenience of a waiting driver, appropriate vehicle, and child restraint makes the difference meaningful.

For families with older children who do not need car seats, a regular taxi from the counter works fine. Just ensure the vehicle is large enough for your luggage before loading everything in.
