Port Moresby Airport Transfer Guide for Families and Kids

Traveling to Port Moresby with children is uncommon for tourists but not unusual for expatriate families, NGO workers, and those visiting family. The airport and city require more planning than typical family destinations.

The terminal with children

Jacksons International Airport is functional but basic. The arrivals hall has limited seating, no play areas, and no family-specific facilities. Baggage claim can be slow, and the hall gets warm. Immigration queues for international arrivals move at their own pace. Have snacks, water, and something to keep children occupied during the wait.

Luggage trolleys are sometimes available but not guaranteed. If you are managing strollers, car seats, and suitcases, be prepared to carry things by hand.

Transport considerations for families

Child car seats are not provided by any taxi or standard transfer service in Papua New Guinea. This is non-negotiable — if your child needs a car seat, you must bring your own. Some private transfer services can accommodate a car seat you provide if you inform them in advance.

For families, a pre-booked SUV or minivan is the practical choice. It gives you space for luggage, room to install a car seat, and a driver who is expecting your family size. Trying to fit a family with gear into a random taxi at POM is not a good experience.

Hotel shuttles for families

If your hotel offers airport pickup, this is your simplest option. Contact the hotel before your flight with your family size and luggage requirements. Most international-standard hotels in Port Moresby (Hilton, Holiday Inn, Grand Papua, Gateway Hotel) are experienced with families and will send an appropriate vehicle.

The drive to your accommodation

The 8 km drive from POM to central Port Moresby takes 15–30 minutes. Roads vary in quality. The main routes are paved but can be potholed. Traffic during morning and evening rush hours is heavy. Driving styles in Port Moresby are assertive, which can be startling for children not used to it.

Keep windows up and doors locked during the drive — this is standard practice in Port Moresby, not an overreaction.

Security awareness

Port Moresby has genuine security considerations. With children, the approach is simple: use pre-arranged transport, go directly to your accommodation, and follow your hotel's guidance on local movement. Do not walk from the airport. Do not accept unsolicited offers of rides.

Practical tips

  • Bring your own car seat. No exceptions.
  • Book a larger vehicle — SUV or minivan — to fit family luggage.
  • Share your family details with the transfer provider or hotel in advance.
  • Carry PGK cash for incidentals, but your main transport should be pre-paid or charged to the hotel.
  • Pack food and water for the airport — options inside the terminal are limited.
  • Arrive at the terminal prepared for warmth and humidity. Dress children in light layers.
