Arriving at Cappadocia airport with children

Last updated: February 2026

Cappadocia is a genuinely exciting destination for children. The fairy chimneys, cave hotels, and valleys feel like stepping into a storybook. The airport arrival, however, requires a little planning.

The terminal

NAV is small and easy to manage with kids. There is one baggage belt, a short walk to the exit, and no confusing terminal layout. Children will not get lost, and you will be outside within minutes of collecting your bags.

The downside of a small airport is that there are very few facilities. No play area, no family room, and limited food options. If your children need a snack or drink immediately after the flight, bring it with you.

The drive to Goreme

The 30-40 minute drive from NAV to Goreme is on winding roads through the Cappadocian landscape. This is worth knowing because some children (and adults) experience car sickness on twisty roads. If your child is prone to motion sickness, sit them in the front of the vehicle, keep windows slightly open, and avoid screens during the drive. Bring a bag just in case.

On the positive side, the scenery during the drive is remarkable. Older children will enjoy spotting the rock formations and fairy chimneys as you approach the valleys.

Car seats

Taxis at NAV do not carry child car seats. This is a firm rule of the situation, not an occasional oversight. If your child needs a car seat, you must either bring a travel seat or book a transfer service that provides one.

When booking a transfer, state your children's ages and weights clearly. Specify whether you need a rear-facing infant seat, a forward-facing toddler seat, or a booster. Not all transfer companies carry all types, so confirming availability at the time of booking is essential.

Cave hotels with children

Many visitors stay in cave hotels in Goreme, and some of these have steep stairs, low doorways, and uneven surfaces. When your transfer drops you off, the walk from the vehicle to your room may involve steps carved into rock. If you are carrying a sleeping child and luggage, ask your hotel about accessibility and whether staff can help with bags.

Some cave hotels are better suited to families than others. The transfer driver will typically help carry luggage to the entrance.

Balloon rides with children

Many families come to Cappadocia for the balloon experience. Most operators allow children over six, and the basket ride itself is gentle. However, the pickup time is around 04:30-05:00. If you arrived late the previous evening, think carefully about whether very young children (or you) can handle a 04:00 wake-up.

Practical tips for families

  • Book a transfer with appropriate child seats in advance. There are no alternatives at the airport.
  • Pack motion sickness remedies if your children are sensitive to winding roads.
  • Bring snacks and water for the drive; there is nothing between the airport and Goreme.
  • Choose a cave hotel that explicitly welcomes families, some are more adult-oriented.
  • Dress in layers. Cappadocia can be cool, especially at altitude in the mornings and evenings.
  • The valleys around Goreme are excellent for family hiking, but wear sturdy shoes.
