How much it costs to get from Muscat Airport to your destination in Oman

Last updated: April 2026

Muscat is a car-dependent city with no metro, and the airport is 25–35 km from the main hotel areas. The honest starting point is this: there is no published airport taxi tariff for Oman that we can quote, and taxis run on the meter, so the only airport fare you can know in advance is one you booked in advance. What follows is what is actually knowable — the distances and drive times that drive the cost.

The local currency is the Omani rial (OMR), pegged to the US dollar at USD 2.6008 per rial and unchanged since 1986 (Central Bank of Oman). One rial divides into 1,000 baisa. Because the rial is strong, fares that sound small in rials are larger than they look.

Distances to Muscat destinations

Muscat Hills / Golf Course — about 15 km, roughly 15 min

Al Mouj / The Wave — about 18 km, roughly 15–20 min

Ruwi / Mutrah Souq — about 20 km, roughly 15–20 min

Qurum / Shatti Al Qurum — about 25 km, roughly 20–25 min

Al Bustan / Shangri-La area — about 35 km, roughly 25–35 min

These are long private-hire runs rather than metered city trips, so get a quote for the specific route, date and vehicle. For mountain and desert destinations a 4x4 may be required, which costs more than a standard sedan.

How Muscat taxi pricing works

Muscat International Airport's own guidance is that taxi drivers are required to use taximeters for price regulation. Airport taxis are arranged through the Oman Airport taxi office in the public arrivals hall, and the rank is just outside the main terminal building.

What that means in practice: your fare is not fixed in advance, it depends on the distance and the traffic, and no guide can tell you the number honestly. Confirm how you are being charged before you set off, and ask the taxi office if anything is unclear. If you want certainty, the alternative is a transfer priced at booking.

What affects the price

Distance is the main factor. Muscat is spread along roughly 50 km of coastline, so where your hotel is located significantly affects the fare.

Vehicle type matters for transfers. A standard sedan is cheapest. An SUV or luxury vehicle costs more. For long-distance desert or mountain trips, a 4x4 vehicle is typically required and priced higher.

Group size does not affect taxi or transfer pricing — you pay per vehicle, not per head. That makes one vehicle shared between four people far better value than four separate fares, and it is the main reason groups end up ahead with a transfer.

The budget perspective

The cheapest way out of the airport is Mwasalat's route A1 (Al Mabelah – Muscat International Airport – Ruwi), which calls at the airport every 30 minutes according to Mwasalat's own timetable. Mwasalat does not publish the fare online, but the bus costs a small fraction of any taxi. The catch is that it is slow, limited in where it goes, and not practical with luggage.

For most visitors it comes down to a metered taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Ground transport in Oman is inexpensive by European or North American standards, which means the step up from a taxi to a private transfer — a known price, a nicer vehicle, and someone waiting for you — is usually a modest one. But compare the actual numbers on the day rather than any figure printed in a guide.

Currency tips

ATMs in the arrivals hall dispense Omani rials. Taxi drivers often prefer cash, so it is worth having rials on you before you reach the rank — and since the fare comes off the meter, carry more than you think the trip needs. Pre-booked transfers typically accept payment by card in advance, removing the cash requirement entirely.
