Muscat is a car-dependent city with no metro, and the airport is 25–35 km from the main hotel areas. Understanding the cost of ground transport helps you budget correctly. All prices below are in Omani rials (OMR). 1 OMR equals approximately 2.60 USD.

How Muscat taxi pricing works
The airport taxi counter system is fixed-rate and non-negotiable. You state your destination, pay the displayed rate, and receive a voucher. This makes airport taxis in Muscat unusually transparent. There are no hidden charges, no night supplements at the airport counter, and no meter to watch.
Outside the airport, city taxis are metered, and prices are generally low. But for the airport trip specifically, the counter system applies.
What affects the price
Distance is the main factor. Muscat is spread along roughly 50 km of coastline, so where your hotel is located significantly affects the fare.
Vehicle type matters for transfers. A standard sedan is cheapest. An SUV or luxury vehicle costs more. For long-distance desert or mountain trips, a 4x4 vehicle is typically required and priced higher.
Group size does not affect taxi or transfer pricing — you pay per vehicle. This makes sharing a transfer excellent value for groups. Four people in a 15 OMR taxi pay under 4 OMR (about 10 USD) each.
The budget perspective
The public bus from the airport costs roughly 0.5 OMR, but it is slow, infrequent, and not practical for travelers with luggage. For most visitors, the airport taxi at 8–15 OMR is the budget option and it is genuinely affordable by international standards.
Compared to European or American airports, transport from Muscat Airport is inexpensive. A taxi to your hotel for 10 OMR (26 USD) is a fraction of what you would pay at Heathrow, CDG, or JFK. The low cost of ground transport in Oman means that upgrading from a taxi to a private transfer — with a nicer vehicle and someone waiting for you — is a modest expense that buys genuine comfort.
Currency tips
ATMs in the arrivals hall dispense Omani rials. The airport taxi counter accepts cash (rials) and sometimes cards. If you are landing late and the ATM is your first source of local currency, withdraw at least 20 OMR to cover your taxi fare with a buffer. Pre-booked transfers typically accept payment by card in advance, removing the cash requirement entirely.
