LVI - Livingstone

Late Night Arrivals at Livingstone Airport

LVI does not handle a heavy schedule of late flights, but some connections — particularly from Johannesburg (SAA, Airlink) or via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) — can land in the evening or after dark. Here is what to expect.

What the Airport Looks Like at Night

Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport is quiet at the best of times. After dark, it is very quiet. The terminal has basic lighting but limited services. There is no 24-hour cafe, no lounge, and food options are either closed or minimal. The arrivals hall empties quickly once a flight clears.

The parking area outside is dimly lit. This is not a place where you want to be standing around hoping for a ride.

Your Realistic Options

Pre-booked transfer: This is effectively your only reliable option for a late arrival. A driver will be waiting for you in the parking area with a name board. Good transfer companies track flights, so they will adjust for delays. Confirm your flight number when booking.

Hotel pickup: If your hotel or lodge offers airport transfers, they will usually accommodate late arrivals. Confirm this directly with the property, as some smaller lodges have cut-off times.

Taxi: Extremely unlikely after 8 PM. Do not count on finding one.

The Night Drive

The road from the airport to Livingstone is paved and in reasonable condition. The drive itself is safe, but there are a few things to be aware of after dark:

  • Pedestrians on the road. People walk along the road at night, often wearing dark clothing. A careful driver handles this fine, but it is why you want someone who knows the road.
  • Animals. The area around Livingstone is not fenced, and animals occasionally wander onto the road. Elephants are not unheard of. Your driver will know the common spots.
  • Limited street lighting. The road is not fully lit between the airport and the town outskirts.
None of this is dangerous with a competent driver — it is simply different from what you might be used to.

If Your Flight Is Delayed

Delays are fairly common on regional African routes. If your flight is delayed significantly, contact your transfer company as soon as you know. Most operators in Livingstone are small teams, and a quick WhatsApp message goes a long way. If your delay pushes arrival to the early hours of the morning, confirm that your driver can still meet you.

Practical Advice

  • Book your transfer in advance. This is non-negotiable for a late arrival at LVI.
  • Share your flight number so the driver can track delays.
  • Have your transfer company's phone number saved and accessible offline.
  • Carry some US dollars in cash in case of any unexpected costs.
  • Eat before you land — there is nothing available at the airport late at night.
Arriving late at Livingstone is not stressful as long as you have a transfer arranged. The airport is simple, the drive is short, and within 15 minutes of walking out of arrivals you can be at your hotel.
