How Much Does a Transfer from Lusaka Airport to the City Cost?

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is about 22 km east of Lusaka city centre. There is no public bus to the city, so you are choosing between taxis, ride-hailing apps, and pre-booked transfers.

Airport taxis

Taxis at the airport are not metered. The driver will quote a price and you are expected to negotiate. To Lusaka city centre, expect to pay 20-40 USD or the equivalent in Zambian Kwacha. The starting price will often be at the top of that range, especially if the driver can tell you are a first-time visitor. With some negotiation, 25-30 USD is reasonable for the city centre.

The challenge is that without local knowledge, you have no reference point for what is fair. Some drivers are straightforward, others are not. This is not a scam, it is just how unmetered taxi markets work.

Pre-booked private transfers

A pre-booked transfer to Lusaka city centre costs 25-50 USD for a standard car. The price is agreed when you book, so there is no haggling at the airport. The driver meets you in arrivals, helps with bags, and takes you directly to your destination. For destinations further from the centre, prices adjust accordingly.

Common routes and approximate transfer prices: East Park Mall or Levy Junction area is 20-35 USD. Kabulonga, Rhodes Park, or Woodlands run 25-40 USD. Makeni or Ibex Hill are 30-45 USD. The Protea Hotel or Southern Sun area is 25-35 USD.

Ride-hailing apps

Uber and Yango are available in Lusaka. A ride from the airport to the city centre is typically 15-30 USD through the app. Prices are lower than taxis in most cases, but you need mobile data to use the app, which means either having a local SIM or using roaming. Availability at the airport is improving but not guaranteed, especially late at night or during off-peak hours.

Hotel shuttles

Many of the larger hotels in Lusaka offer airport shuttle services, either complimentary or for a fee of 15-30 USD. If your hotel provides this, it is one of the easiest options. Contact your hotel before arrival to confirm availability and meeting arrangements.

What affects the price

Time of day matters. Late-night arrivals generally cost more for taxis and may have surge pricing on apps. The specific neighbourhood you are heading to matters as well: some areas of Lusaka are further from the airport or involve roads with more traffic. During rainy season (November to April), roads can be slower and journeys take longer, which affects metered or time-based pricing on apps.

Currency considerations

Most transfer services and taxi drivers accept US Dollars. The Zambian Kwacha is the local currency, and ATMs in the arrivals hall dispense it. If you are paying in cash, having small USD bills (10s and 20s) makes transactions smoother. Some drivers may not have change for a 100 USD bill.

For a hassle-free arrival, a pre-booked transfer at a fixed price is the simplest approach. You know exactly what you will pay, and there are no surprises after a long flight.
