Taxi vs pre-booked transfer from Heraklion Airport

Both taxis and pre-booked transfers will get you from Heraklion Airport to your destination in Crete. The right choice depends on where you are going, when you arrive, and how many people are in your group.

Taxis at Heraklion Airport

Taxis queue outside the arrivals exit. During the day in season, there are usually cars available. There is no published airport price list: the fare to the city centre is whatever the meter reads, on the national tariff (day rate, higher night rate after midnight, plus airport and luggage surcharges). For longer distances, either insist on the meter or agree the flat fare before you set off. Most drivers are straightforward, but confirm the price before getting in for any trip beyond the city.

Taxis are sedans. If you have more than two large bags or need a child seat, this becomes a limitation. Drivers do not carry child seats.

The main drawback is availability. During peak charter arrival times in summer, the taxi queue can run dry temporarily. At night, the supply shrinks further. There is no Uber or ride-hailing alternative.

Pre-booked transfers

A pre-booked transfer means a driver is assigned to your flight. They monitor arrival times and wait in the terminal with a name sign. The price is fixed at booking, regardless of traffic or time of day.

The advantages are predictability and vehicle selection. You can request a minivan for larger groups, a child seat for families, or simply guarantee a car will be waiting when you land at 01:00.

The cost is typically similar to or slightly above a taxi fare for the same route. The premium is mainly paying for the guarantee of availability and door-to-door service.

• You are traveling solo or as a couple with minimal luggage

For short trips (airport to Heraklion center), taxis are slightly cheaper. For longer trips to resorts, transfer prices are often competitive with taxi fares because taxi drivers may charge more for long-distance trips without a meter.

For resort destinations, transfers sometimes undercut taxis because transfer companies set competitive fixed rates for popular routes — and unlike a flat fare negotiated at the rank, you can see the transfer price before you fly.

If you are staying in Heraklion city and arrive during the day, a taxi is fine. If you are heading anywhere else in Crete, especially at night or with family, a pre-booked transfer is the more practical option. The price difference is small, and the certainty is valuable.
