Charter flights to Crete regularly land between 22:00 and 02:00 during the summer season. If your flight is scheduled for late evening, here is what to realistically expect.
The airport after dark
Heraklion Airport does not close, but it empties out significantly after the last scheduled arrival. Shops and food outlets inside the terminal close early, often by 22:00. The terminal itself stays lit and accessible, but facilities are minimal.
Passport control for late arrivals tends to be faster than daytime, simply because fewer flights overlap. Baggage reclaim is usually quicker too. You can expect to be outside the terminal within 20-30 minutes of landing.
Getting a taxi after midnight
The taxi rank outside arrivals operates as long as flights are landing, but the number of available cars drops sharply after 23:00. If your flight arrives at the same time as one or two other charters, you may be competing with dozens of passengers for a small number of taxis.
Night taxi fares carry a surcharge of roughly 20-40% over daytime rates. A trip to Heraklion center that costs 20-25 EUR during the day might be 30-40 EUR at night. Longer trips to resorts like Hersonissos or Agios Nikolaos will be proportionally more expensive.
Public transport
The KTEL bus to Heraklion city center stops running around 22:30-23:00. There is no night bus service. If your flight lands after 22:00, the bus is not a viable option.
Why pre-booking makes sense at night
Late-night arrivals are where pre-booked transfers prove their value. Your driver is committed to waiting for your specific flight, regardless of delays. There is no queue, no negotiation in a dark parking lot, and the price is agreed in advance.
This matters more for Crete than some destinations because many visitors are heading to resorts 30-90 minutes from the airport. Arriving at midnight and finding yourself without guaranteed transport for a 60 km drive is not a comfortable situation.
Practical tips for late arrivals
- Download offline maps of Crete before you land. Cell data may take a moment to activate.
- Have your hotel address written down or saved on your phone.
- Carry some euros in cash. ATMs at the airport work, but not all accept every card type.
- If you are renting a car, most airport rental counters close by 23:00. Confirm late pickup arrangements in advance.
- The airport has no hotel within walking distance. The nearest accommodation is in Heraklion city, about 5 km away.
